Do they Serve during poling hours at the Tavern?

christiangirl 11-03-2008 04:36 PM

There's a storm coming in and it's scheduled to be rainy and windy all day. NOT good conditions for going to vote in the morning, but I'm bringing heavy jackets and extra umbrellas for my friends. No storm formed against me shall prosper! :p

In early voting, is your "ballot" counted right there and then and is in the "pool" of recorded votes/polling?

No. They are essentially sequestered in the machines, which can't be opened until it's time to count. They will be counted tomorrow night.

My friend found out TODAY that her change of address forms were "lost" so she's still registered here, 3 hours away from her new home. She's in the Navy so it's not like she can just call out of work to make the drive. Is there anyone she can call to get permission to vote where she is? People have mention "voter judges" and "FWAB" and things, but I don't know if she's got any hope, does anyone know?

Nope. It's clear from his other two posts that it's Earp. Took him longer to come back (yet again) than I had expected.

Not to mention the "RJR" in the screen name. Good job, Tommy. Now go back to where you came from.

I brought this up at lunch today with my co-workers and we were joking about "Don't Drink and Vote" campaigns. If your perception is off, you might fill in the wrong bubble! Now the whole confusion about butterfly ballots makes sense to me! And for those who do the "complete the arrow" ballots", how would you make a straight line? LOL

I guess I found out that there are other places around here too. One of my co-workers votes at a church.

Kevin 11-03-2008 08:42 PM

If you're considering voting Obama, yes, it's over. You've won. No need to vote. Just stay home on Tuesday and watch your guy win!

(and just so I don't commit felonies in several states, let me just add to that that I'm completely kidding)

I can't really get too excited about this election. My Presidential vote doesn't really matter one way or another as my state is going to be handily won (and will be for the foreseeable future) by the Republicans.

I've been fairly active (as much as I can be) in promoting my favorites for semi-obscure state offices, and yes, I want to see some changes there. For those familiar with Oklahoma, I'm in favor of Dana Murphy and Charles Gray for the Corporation Commission [a quasi judicial/legislative/executive board of 3 individuals which oversee all of the state's public utilities and freight carriers]. I think the current officeholders (excluding Anthony) are both bought and paid for shills of a certain natural gas provider and another certain telecommunications company. There may be one person on this board who has an inkling of what I'm talking about... and she'll probably disagree with me vehemently :)

Thetagirl218 11-03-2008 09:06 PM

I voted a week ago via absentee....I honestly don't understand the huge lines in Florida. All you have to do to vote absentee is to call and request a ballot.

Of course I got mocked several times by the elections official from being a Republican teacher....He compared me to KKK....Lets just say I had a nice chat with his supervisor...

OMG, that is so uncalled for! How stupid. IDKW, but that reminds me of the British guy who told me 9/11 was just Americans getting what they deserved. I just had a HUGE flashback.

There was a big kerfluffle in the next village over because the polling place got moved to a Lutheran church because their village hall didn't have enough parking and some man got mad that the church handed out cookies during the primary.

Who gets mad about cookies?

Buttonz 11-04-2008 12:35 AM

Mom and I are going at 8 tomorrow. If the line is crazy at 8 *O I really hope not* I'm leaving and will take a super early lunch around 10:30 and go vote (I work around the corner from where I live and about 5 blocks from where I'm voting). I hope I can just vote at 8 and be out...but I'm not sure that will be possible.

BabyPiNK_FL 11-04-2008 12:49 AM

I've only voted (since I've been able to vote) in libraries or community centers. I think the majority of our early voting polls are located in libraries, although the new city hall is now a poll station. I'm sure there are churches, schools, and fire houses too, I just don't personally know of any. I do recall seeing one at a school when I was much younger though.

Not liquor, but I understand that the tavern smell is still quite... strong.

LucyKKG 11-04-2008 03:24 AM

I sent my absentee ballot already since I won't be in my home county then (I'm @ school). I can't WAIT for it to be over, but I'm nervous about a few results. I think I'll go over to my man's house and stay glued to the TV to find out results.

christiangirl 11-04-2008 11:27 AM

I VOTED! 5 of us from school went together to keep each other company in line. We got there just before the polls opened at 6am and it was nearly 9am before we were done. We were all late to our 9am classes but it was worth it. :D After this meeting I have, I'm going back to my apartment and praying/hiding till tomorrow. I won't be able to function until I know who won.

For a lot of people, part of voting is the experience of actually being at your polling place, pulling the lever, and getting that little "I Voted" sticker. Some people are willing to wait in line for that, and if that's what they want to do, so be it. I voted absentee in Florida, and it's just not the same. I feel like there's something I'm forgetting to do today.

christiangirl 11-04-2008 12:45 PM

^^^That's one of the reasons I refused to do it early.

SWTXBelle 11-04-2008 02:33 PM

Today's Polls and Final Election Projection: Obama 349, McCain 189

While it is still very important to everyone to get out and vote (after all most if not all states have other important matters on ballots) this is the
Today's Polls and Final Election edition from fivethirtyeight.com:

Today's Polls and Final Election Projection: Obama 349, McCain 189

"It's Tuesday, November 4th, 2008, Election Day in America. The last polls have straggled in, and show little sign of mercy for John McCain. Barack Obama appears poised for a decisive electoral victory.

Our model projects that Obama will win all states won by John Kerry in 2004, in addition to Iowa, New Mexico, Colorado, Ohio, Virginia, Nevada, Florida and North Carolina, while narrowly losing Missouri and Indiana. These states total 353 electoral votes. Our official projection, which looks at these outcomes probabilistically -- for instance, assigns North Carolina's 15 electoral votes to Obama 59 percent of the time -- comes up with an incrementally more conservative projection of 348.6 electoral votes.

We also project Obama to win the popular vote by 6.1 points; his lead is slightly larger than that in the polls now, but our model accounts for the fact that candidates with large leads in the polls typically underperform their numbers by a small margin on Election Day..................................."

I agree with your last part, but about the first...how could they call it this early? It isn't even 3 o'clock yet.

They're not calling it. He's citing fivethirtyeight.com, which compiles and weights polls and demographic data to make statistical projections about the probablity of various outcomes. It currently shows that, based on polls and other data, the statistical probablity that John McCain can gain a majority in the Electoral College at 1.1%

There's a lever? I don't understand why there are different ways to vote. Our voting is all electronic. You get this a Voter ID card to use on the touch-screen "computer." I thought it was like that everywhere. It seems like a much more effective & efficient way to vote, than to punch out a hole in a ballot.

There are different ways to vote...in every state even. NY has some electronic, some the old style with the lever. Sometimes just blocks apart (yes, I know this for a fact).

They really need to set laws for the entire COUNTRY on how to vote, regarding the type of machines, early voting laws, hours the polling places are opened (some close as early as 7PM!) etc. It's crazy that NOTHING is uniformed besides the choices for President.

nikki1920 11-04-2008 06:58 PM

AGDee 11-04-2008 07:54 PM

I think what types of ballots, etc. should be left up to the localities. They can't all afford computers. We had the scantron type ballots and I think these are ideal. They were able to just set up additional cardboard dividers to accommodate more voters when the lines were getting out of control. You could quickly double how many spots were available. The machine scans and tabulates them as you put your ballot into it so at the end of the night, they print out a report and turn it in.

agzg 11-04-2008 09:27 PM

I think I've used 3 or 4 different types of ballots. Today, we used fill in the arrow. When I was in Pittsburgh I used the touch screen method. When I was in college I voted absentee, and then in my home town we had the booths with the lever.

I like to vote, no matter which way. I was excited all day as I waited for live-in to get home from work so we could vote together. I guess it was good we went together - he needed someone to vouch for his registration!

SWTXBelle 11-04-2008 11:13 PM

I always liked the punch ballots.

It looks like it will be over sooner than I thought.

Murphy has admitted she fraudulently notarized a legal document that she was signing. She's also been bought and paid for by the industry that she supposedly wants to regulate.
