My 2 cents...

First job out of college was a Desk Clerk in a Hotel. I was in management within 6 months.

While in graduate school, I did substitute teaching. The local school systems were dying for college grads. No certification was necessary. If you get in good with some of the teachers, they recommend you when they plan to be out.

I also spent a few years in retail at The Limited (when it was owned by The Limited).
We did not put associates on commissions but they did have goals. The upside of it was that it was easy to cross-sell accessories to make your goal. Stores like Victoria Secret sell themselves. All you need to do is pay attention to the customer and "consult" and they end up throwing more items at the cash register.

If you decide to go into retail, I would be choosy where you go. Decide what type of clientele you want to handle (can handle) and what you want to do. You may need to start as an associate (full time with benefits) and work your way into management.

Interestingly, there is a new JC Penney going in near my house that is a new concept. Evidently, they have little boutiques like Liz Clayborne and Sephora within the store. Sounds interesting and like a good opportunity for a recent grad
