My criticism of most TKE chapters I've run into isn't hair gel, it's that "they're the chapter full of kids in cargo shorts and glasses wearing the american eagle t-shirts with 'witty' sayings on the front who dress like it's still freshman year of high school in 2001, are absurdly socially awkward, don't get paired with anyone for homecoming and have one of the two worst social calendars on campus but still act like they're the best". And it doesn't really bother me that they're that way, I interact with them very little. But it's absolutely not stupid and superficial to hear someone is thinking of rushing one of those TKE chapters and have your first response be to think "Oh my god, no. Why?"

"Tau Kappa Epsilon at the University of Georgia was founded on March 25, 1972. Since then, over 800 men have joined us and our chapter has earned the Top Teke Award thirteen times, second most in the nation."

Well, apparently they can fool an average of 11 people a pledge class. And it probably isn't hard to keep your GPA up and really polish those applications to nationals when you don't have something like a social life to distract you.

*ducks*

If you like the guys at UGA TKE and like hanging out at the house with them, then it might be a good choice. Just be aware that hanging out at the house with the guys is about all you are going to get out of the experience.

PS- I would not normally say this, but thought it wise given UGA TKE's tendency to engage in unusually predatory and dishonest rush tactics. They tried it on me as an out-of-stater not realizing I came into the process educated, and I know for a fact it goes on to this day. So this is one case where I think GC is a fine place to warn people.

what predatory and dishonest rush tactics are you speaking of?

Do you even know any TKEs at UGA? Or are they just not in you social circle therefore they suck?

That in and of itself is okay- to each his own. What I object to is that back in my time TKE marketed themselves in a way completely opposite from this reality. They spoke about planned mixers etc. And they called every freaking day during formal rush- and even after. Once I finally told them the 2 houses I was rushing, they STILL did not give up even though that should have been a big clue. They most targeted people like me who were out of state, or people who came into the Greek system not knowing how it works. So it was all about getting numbers and going after the rushees who were least likely to know what was happening.

Some of my eventual pledge brothers got the same treatment, and a couple of guys in my rush group who were naive bought into it and pledged there.

Well, as seems to always be the case- a week or two later a bunch of their pledges left, including one guy in my rush group who I had hoped would pledge with me.

...

So I am not getting on TKE UGA for being that chapter. I AM critizing them for systematically deceiving and screwing over guys who come into the rush process just to keep their numbers up. This goes beyond the usual BS rushees get during rush in my view. The number of people who buy it and later change their mind is a testament to that.

TKEs aren't in anyone's social circle, that's why they suck.

And PhiGam goes to FSU, so I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that no, the reason he thinks UGA TKE sucks isn't because they won't be friends with him.

Crackerbarrel spelled it out with his post quoting my original comments- and if you read the thread you would have seen it clearly for yourself. If you care to dispute any of the comments I made, bring it...

Out-of-staters finally learned their lesson too?

Or, because like EE-BO said, the guys realize they've been had and drop from pledgeship.
