I've also seen it for Gamma Phi Beta with the four characters representing our creed: Love (Tin Man), Labor (Lion), Learning (Scarecrow), Loyalty (Dorothy).

I might be in the minority, but I don't think Wizard of Oz is outdated at all. I'd much rather have our members use a skit that everyone understands and is a classic rather than something involving popular culture (VH1 and Bravo reality shows, anyone?).

I've said it before - but we need to remember that a rush skit alumnae and actives are tired of has NEVER BEEN SEEN BY THE PNM. One good thing about the Wizard of Oz is that everyone is familiar with it. If you chose to be too "cool" you run the risk of having pnm who have no idea what you are talking about - for example, if you use a television show that they don't watch.

I agree with this. Although I do think you can get away with using the PREMISE for a current tv show/movie, but you have to be careful about getting into specifics where people who don't watch the show wouldn't get it.

For instance, you could do an "America's Next Top Sorority Girl" skit, as long as you don't ASSUME that everyone would recognize the "judges" or any specific contestants/challenges/photo shoots.

This thread makes me laugh a bit, because as a PNM I would have HATED to see a Wizard of Oz skit. That movie scared the bejeezus out of me when I was 3 years old, and to this day, I really don't like it.

Was it the flying monkeys? I hated the flying monkeys.

Gamma Nu had no flying monkeys in their WOO skit.:)

Between the flying monkeys and the witch melting, I was freaked out. I remember that I cried all the way home.

My family used to have to get me out of the room when the witch sets the scarecrow on fire and again when she threatens him right before they douse her with water. I had a horrible phobia of fire as a kid.

TV show skits are a lot harder to do nowadays when there are 243862384683276 cable channels and networks. There used to be 3 networks and PBS, period.

For example - in the 80s you could do a "Late Night with ASA" skit because even if people weren't REGULAR Letterman watchers, they knew about things like the Top 10 list - simply because there wasn't much else to watch late at night. You could be secure that they had seen the show at least once. There are so many more choices now that you can't assume that anymore.

That being said, I still think Wizard of Oz is overdone.

This thread made me chuckle, as I went through rush in 1973, and one of my pref houses featured a Wizard of Oz skit, (there's nooooo place like hooooome!). It was well done, but I thought the theme was silly and out of date then!

I was sitting on the front row, being preffed by a senior I absolutely loved from the first round party, listening to another rushee in the back of the room (later found out she was an in-house legacy) sobbing hysterically, seeing the girl next to me tearing up, as Dorothy found her way home. I thought, "This skit is making me want to either 1) giggle or 2) gag, but bawling my eyes out is not option 3. Pref parties were 90 minutes, so fortunately, it also included conversation, songs, refreshments and a candle/flower ceremony, so the munchkin overdose was diluted by the time the party ended.

I pledged (in spite of the skit--it was a great chapter), and for the next two years faked enthusiasm for a pref night the rest of the house (and many rushees) LOVED. Fortunately, one year I was a Rush Counsellor, (rho chi, now...) so "missed" it. Darn. The year after I graduated, they changed it to something sophisticated and beautiful. Double Darn.

That being said, no matter what skit or theme you choose, some actives and PNMs will love it, others will be neutral or negative. In my experience, while a great skit can help showcase talent and creativity, it doesn't replace great conversations and genuine bonding as a deal closer.
