I thought about Jasmine, but unfortunately now too many people will think of the Disney princess and not the flower.

And yes, knowing the breed would help.

And how could I have forgotten that in the original draft of Gone With the Wind, Margaret Mitchell's heroine wasn't named Scarlett -- she was named Pansy.

And as for flowers, perhaps WVU alpha phi would like Lily (of the Valley).

Continuing the literary and movie trend,

Clara or Eula ("The Long Hot Summer)
Zilphia, Adie, Jewel, Cora, Caddy, Dilsey (Faulkner)
Calpurnia or Maudie (but not Mayella) (To Kill a Mockingbird)
Blanche or Stella ("A Streetcar Named Desire")

oooh - Calpurnia! Callie would be the perfect call name! But now I like Lily, too. (Is the dog white?)

One of my favorite Southern names is Harper (Harper Lee - "To Kill A Mockingbird"). I see a couple of people have mentioned characters from the book, too.

I also love "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" - Maggie and Brick would make a good canine couple.

Beau would be a good boy name to go with Bella, too. I just realized you already had the female dog and were just looking for a boy's name.

Or...Nelle (as in Nelle Harper Lee)

or...Nell (as in Nell Carter)

or...Nell (as in the character from the movie of the same name depicting a girl raised in the backwoods of North Carolina!)

Other way around, I think -- she's looking for a girl's name.

So I am 99% sure I'm going to get a dog here within the next week or so after 8 months of consideration. I really give my dog a cute southern name since I'll be getting one down here, and my coworker just stole Duke and Dixie when she got 2 Boston terriers last weekend!

I'm thinking if I get a boy I'm gonna go with Jackson, but any suggestions for a girl? I don't want to do Belle because my dog at home is Bella and it's too close.

If you get a female I think the name "Precious" is cute. If you get a male I think "Ramsey" is a cute name.:)

Since I was raised in Louisiana, southern always means Louisiana to me! You could name her Lagniappe and nickname her Laney. It means "a little something extra." Like MysticCat said, magnolia would be a good name. My dog's name is Willow (he's a red headed dachschund so we named him after the character from the movie Willow...Willow Ufgood.) Willow is sorta southern. Jolie is also a southern name...French for pretty. Any double name will sound southern, also...ie. Anna Kay, Billy Lee, Sally Ann. You get the idea.

I want a boxer named Harvey. (for the James Stewart movie about the guy with the 6ft tall invisible rabbit as a friend.)

TSteven 05-28-2008 06:31 PM

Doo Drop or Fanny.

I would think Maggie might be more appropriate for a kitten - as in "Maggie the Cat".

I like the name Gracie for a female dog...and to me it can go with various breeds.

PrettyBoy 05-28-2008 07:27 PM

Hell, just name the joker Spike, male or female and call it a day.

ihearttrisigma 05-28-2008 09:12 PM

I just got a new puppy, a Pug, two months ago and due to his snorts, grunting and other odd sounds I decided to name him...

... piglet.

I mostly call him just pig - & everytime we go on walks he is such the star. I've never had a bad reaction to the name (yet).

In addition to the snorts, his tail is curly like a pig and he sure does eat like one!!

Anyway, for a girl..and you're in the south what about "Sweet Tea" or Sweet Pea"?

I had an English Springer Spaniel named Lily (brown & white).
We also had a beagle named Daisy (registered name: Daisy Duke).
I like flower names for dogs:
Carnie (Carnation)
Dahly (Dahlia)
Holly (Hollyhock)
Ivy
Peony
Posy
Poppy
You get the idea. But this dog is a boy, right? The flower names are definitely too girly. How about taking a sport & words from it as inspiration? :)

She asked for girl names:

I don't think you can name him/her until you see them... then a name will come to you.
