Wrong.
Billy Joel wrote the song about a brief 6 month stint he actually did perform as a "piano man". He was having legal issues (mismanagement of money and trying to get out of a record lable), and was performing under the name Bill Martin. The people he sings about in the song were regular bar patrons, and he basically BS'd his way through the song.
He has told the story behind "Piano Man" at many of his concerts, and also during a college tour (not concert) back in the 90s. |
