Sexual Deviance Isn't Just TV's Fault

However, I do not believe that there is more child abuse and child sexual abuse today than there was in the past. We just hear about it more on the news. If the priest sex scandal in the Catholic church is any example, this type of abuse has been widespread for decades but carefully swept under the rug. Simply attributing this kind of behavior to the "society" we live in is underestimating the problem. Yes...I wonder where these kids get this idea, the same as I wonder how NYC policemen got the idea to sodomize Amadou Diallo all those years ago. Maybe these children were abused at some point, but there needs to be some accountability beyond "I did it because I saw it on tv or down the street."

I agree with you. Long before we were seeing a great amount of sex or degredation on TV, there were those who were quietly being molested by priests, family members, or friends of the family. This isn't new. Just because we have more media outlets and instant communication tools (cable, Internet, e-mail), doesn't prove that this is happening more often. If we were going to have an educated debate here, someone can always feel free to bring introduce some data into the argument. And, quite frankly, at the ages of 13-15 these children would have already developed some semblance of sexual identity. Forceful sex acts are deviant indeed, but to say that they must've been brought on by prior acts is dubious. I, too, wonder if we can blame TV and society on what was done to Amadou Diallo.

Because our society won't take accountability. At least some of us still value and understand that when it comes to creating the kind of culture, society, community, we want, it really does take a village.

Wow...I'm not sure why you are attacking me. I actually do not believe that violence is any worse now than it ever was...there is PLENTY of evidence that the national media focuses so much on any violent act in any small town that we've come to think that violence is more prevalent today than in the past. The truth is, violence and crime go in cycles. Violence was more prevalent in NYC in the 80s and 90s. It's much less prominent this decade. Crime is up in Baltimore where I live. Gang related crime, which plagued north Louisiana throughout the 90s (California gangs followed I-20 over on drug routes and became the most numerous members of the death row crowd in short order) has significantly decreased. The nurses in our ICUs at LSU in Shreveport used to bar the doors to the unit when a gang member was admitted because gang members from rival gangs were trying to beat down the doors! Sexual abuse, child abuse have been rampant for years. From the perspective of someone with YEARS of experience in a level 1 Trauma center, this increase in violence is overblown. Things that have increased are the abuse of prescription drugs, the number of people sustaining severe burns while cooking crystal meth and motor vehicle crashes.
