I really want to bring a Multicultural Greek Council or Independent Greek Council on-campus so we will be included in more activities or have the liberty to further expose our own. For example, the NPHC and the NPC on campus had a sorority ice cream social and our MC org was not invited. It is really sad the way some campuses support the open segragation of organizations. When I proposed starting a MC or independent council on campus the other Greeek MC org. did not want to do it unless their org. as a national set the whole thing up and was basically over it! OK it was my idea!!!! It is sad some people are on a power trip like that. If we have to make a MC council with just our sorority we will.

My campus has a MGC. Currently all of the organizations in it are Latino-based so they are working to get expand to other groups.

I'm not new-org bashing, but starting a council with just your organization as a member misses the point.
__________________________________________________ So you mean to tell me if there was only one NPHC org on a campus they would not have the traditional NPHC council. I doubt that. All I am saying is MCGLO orgs deserve the same recognition and support system as the other sororities on campus. |
This is what I Think...
Greetings everyone!
This is just my personal view on MGC's...I think it's a good idea for those greeks who are not as known on the campus to have a council of their own. It allows for each organization to help each other in terms of expansion and helps each organization get their name out to the campus. I attend Georgia State and just in the past year we have 3 new sororities, Sigma Lambda Gamma(latina-based), Theta Nu Xi(multicultural) and Delta Phi Lambda(asian-interest). They are in the process of forming a MGC right now. My sorority was invited to join, but unfortunately we had to decline :( I liked the idea because more than anything, it's a good thing to know that the support of other organizations that are going through the same kinds of "growing pains" is there. My school is commuter, so you can understand just how difficult it is to start something new AND maintain it. Even though I'm in a service sorority, we are in the same boat as these organizations-we're still trying to grow and expand within our chapter although we've been here about two years longer. I hated that we couldn't join but I made clear to those organizations that my chapter would be there in support of their programs. I believe in supporting those who are going through what I had to go through as a chapter founder. So I wish them a lot of luck and success-and the same good wishes goes out to all of you too!:D In Service, gamma_girl52 Gamma Sigma Sigma~Service With a Smile Since 1952 |

To clear some of this up:
There is a "National" Multi-cultural Council which is being processed, which is what this tread was orginally about. The National Council, not the councils by Universities or colleges. Also many Universities do have a Multi-cultural Council on Campus,to be more specfic, Texas and The State of Florida have these councils at some area Universities and Colleges. |
Thanks DGPhoney, I was gonna make that clear that the thread is about a National MG council.
But I think I agree w/ CrucialCrimson about if there was only one group on campus....what's the point of forming a council. At my alma mater, we just formed a MGC and there are about 10 groups in it. However, it was just my sorority, I doubt we would have started an MGC. The whole point of a council is for those orgs involved to support one other, just like CrucialCrimson mentioned. What would be the point of a council w/ just one group? I guess I can see if you wanted to get one started so that in the future, when there are more groups to join, it would be there. But then again, that doesn't sound like a good idea. I mean it does, but it doesn't....might as well wait when there are others to join. Just wanted to state my opinion since I'm in a MGC :) |

I think we are talkin about 2 different things. What I was talking about was only on a local level...meaning like at your college. I wouldn't see the need to form a multicultural greek council if there wasn't enough greeks to really form one at the school. But as far as on the National level...that's a different issue. Since there's various groups all over the country, then yes, I would try and get w/ other organizations to form one. I hope that clears things up. :) Oh and no there isn't a National MGC to my knowledge. One had formed about 5 years ago, but I have no clue what happened to it. I guess it didn't get off the ground. I was following it for awhile but stopped b/c I wasn't hearing anything further about it. So like I said, I have no clue if it even exists anymore or if there's another one out there. I know there are councils at various schools (local level) but not National. Maybe we should do something about that :) |
