Standards of Learning

Yes, SOL stands for Standards of Learning....meaning every child, regardless of IQ or educational placement, is held to the same standards as every general education student in the same grad. As a former teacher of Autistic children, let me tell you.....it's virtually impossible to get them to match colors let alone pass an 8th grade SOL. If the entire school doesn't pass at a certain level, the school can lose funding.....

We teachers say they stand for what you are if you (or your students) don't pass them....Sh** out of Luck!!!

I do wonder how the Montgomery County school specifically for Autistic Students handles it...

NCLB is a national program.

The SOL's are a Virginia program.

Yep....means those of us who worked in Autism and Special Ed programs had TONS of pressure to make our students keep up with the rest of the Gen Ed kids.....virtually impossible to do when one of your students is completely non-verbal and stabs you with whatever pen or pencil you give him.

Trying to get him to write on a scantron sheet? In the words of Michelle Tanner (Full House) OH, PUH-LEEESE!

Depends on the type of Autism. My oldest has been viewed in the Autism Spectrum (undetermined High Function - possible Aspergers) and he finds the scantron tests *more* fun due to his lousy handwriting...

Hmm. Maybe you can give the kit a punchout board like they have on "The Price is Right".
