Western Kentucky University's is called "Big Red" it is this actual big red blob kinda looks like a red ghost outfit. Weird, huh?

That's right, forgot about Gunston. He's named after Gunston Hall, George Mason's residence in Virginia (nice, but no Mt Vernon or Montecello). He's a big green moster like thing that dances around at basketball games mostly, and he usually wears some kind of GMU shirt. As to when we were first gifted with gunston...who knows?

The University of Alabama is the Crimson Tide and the mascot is an elephant named Big Al who drives around (at least he used to) in a giant rollerskate. (No I'm not kidding.) This was a question on Weakest Link and the guy got it wrong!! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/mad.gif

I do not go here, but it's where my brother went to Law school...it's in Topeka, Ks and the school is Washburn University and their mascot is the Ichabods, which is defined as a Southern Gentleman

I'd say that's as far away from fearsome as one can get. For starters...I've never quite classified Kansas as a southern state..

One of the girls I played volleyball with went to Washburn University. We used to make fun of her because of the mascot.

I didn't go to any of these, but my favorites are...

University of Oregon "Ducks," (not to be confused with the Mighty Ducks) University of Delaware "Fighting Blue Hens," and (although not a college) The Ft. Collins (Colorado) High School "Lambkins."

Then, of course, there's the Stanford Cardinal -- with no "s" on the end.

And, finally (maybe...I keep thinking of more) The Ohio State University "Buckeyes." Before anyone asks, the Buckeye is a tasteless, sentless nut with no known value that grows on trees. (I don't think it's even eatable) It's kinda round and dark brown with a round white spot. Of course the name came from the fact that Ohio is "The Buckeye State." Go figure. I've gotta admit that their mascot "Brutus the Buckeye" is pretty scary. (Trying hard not to giggle)

Oh, I forgot about the Kent State University "Golden Flashers." Oooops, it's actually "The Golden Flashes." Sorry.

PS The University of Colorado teams are known as the "Golden Buffalos." (They're nicknamed the "Buffs," but I ain't gonna go there) Funny, they always look brown to me -- but you don't want stand in front of that sucker when she (yes, Ralphie III, the real live mascot, is a she) runs around the field at the beginning of each half. The human mascot (who wears this buffalo costume is called "Chip." Get it? Buffalo Chip?

I know this is about college mascots, but I had to tell you about this one. One of my friends went to HS near St Louis & his masoct was "The Orphans" (sp?) He said it was becasue a long time ago their team won some big game & the commentator said "they look like orphans" because their uniforms were in such bad shape. How woul you like to cheer for the orphans? lol

From 1876-1893, Richmond carried the nickname "Colts" into its athletic contests, so dubbed for their play as an "energetic group of young colts." In the summer of 1894, a new nickname was born. A baseball team comprised of UR athletes and city residents adopted the name "Spiders".

Star pitcher Puss Ellyson's lanky arms and stretching kick confused batters to such an extent that Richmond Times-Dispatch writer Ragland Chesterman used the name of that clever creeping insect, the Spider, to fittingly describe the erudite members of the team. So was created perhaps the most unique school nickname in the nation. To this day, the University of Richmond is the only school in the country which sports the nickname "Spiders."

For those not in the know, its the thing the grim reaper carries. Could HAVE been intimidating, but much less so when the guy carrying it is dressed like a farmer from the 1940's. Okay...Brown's is the Bears...normal enough. Tulane's is the Green Wave, Stanford's is the tree, they used to be called the Indians, now they're the cardinal.

Not a college mascot, but I think it was actually on Dave Letterman's dumbest mascots: There is a town near Clarion PA named Cranberry. Their mascot is, I am not kidding, the Cranberry Berries.
