In Chapel Hill, it's not quite as clear whether things happened on or off campus. The place where she lived is within 1/4 mile from campus, and her car was found less than a mile from campus. There is at least some indication that she had left her house to go to her on-campus office when she was abducted. I think it's safe to say things either happened on or close to campus.

My knowledge of UNC is limited to a couple of visits, so I'll certainly defer. I originally heard "half mile from campus," but I'm not sure if thats just where Eve was found or something else.

A half-mile or so would be about right for where she was found (I mispoke in my earlier post when I mentioned where her car was found -- I meant to say where she was found and where the shots were heard.) Her house was only a few blocks from campus, and her car was found pretty much around the corner and down the street from her house.

Unfortunately, the Phelps bunch (Westboro "Baptist Church") are protesting the funerals. I sincerely hate these people, and that is fairly rare, even for me.
What is this about? Who are these people and why are they protesting a funeral? How awful that must be for the family!!! I have heard of groups protesting funerals of military servicemen (which is disgusting) but what could they possibly be protesting about a young woman's tragic death?

They are a group of extremist wierdos!

I was going to post their sites but I'd rather not advertise for these idiots. Do a Google search and you'll see.

Their logic is that colleges are evil (which despite my feelings about academia, is stupid enough), that they promote homosexuality and godlessness and what not. Irony here is that Auburn is probably among the most conservative, evangelically-minded public schools in the country, but it just shows how far off the reservation these folks are.

They also refer to Burk as a "Christ-rejecting Jew," (she's half Jewish). They're truly despicable people, and the fact that they're alive is a testament to the patience and forgiving nature of the thousands of people they've sought to harm.

I just did the google search and they are a bunch of disgusting sick people! How they can call themselves Christian is beyond me.

But, what could they be protesting about at this funeral?

I tell you, if I ever saw that bunch at a funeral I was at, they might just be digging their own graves. That makes me so upset. Having lost a loved one suddenly and shockingly, my heart absolutely breaks for those parents, the pain is so intense and searing. The funeral is one chance to hear calming words and a place to try to find some peace. For those cretons to disrupt that is just sinful.

I don't say this much - but those people are going to hell.

shinerbock, we cross posted, but you are right that

I just don't think I could be that forgiving. And, I hate to say that about myself.

You would probably fuss and want to fight but would be wise enough to let these morons suffer their own fate.

I think much of the shock value, however, is that both of the immediate areas, Chapel Hill and Auburn, are to my knowledge, pretty safe places. I'm sure things get a little sketchier farther out, but even in Opelika I don't think most AU students have much fear.

Of course, both areas have some poorer, more rural surroundings, and although not especially violent to my knowledge, random violent crime does occasionally occur. unfortunately, these two seemingly random incidents occurred in succession, which certainly doesn't mend the already-present fears of many college students.

Durham is not the safest place and is only 15 minutes or so from Chapel Hill, but Chapel Hill itself always seemed very safe to me while I was at Duke.

IA dukeg, I have family in Durham and it has gotten a little crazy at times. They did find the young man who murdered Courtney Lockhart. He used her ATM card somewhere.

They also have a suspect in the Carson's murder, his picture has been everywhere but they have yet to capture him.

Courtney Lockhart is the person believed to be responsible for the murder of Lauren Burk. Pretty obvious that's what you were saying, I just wanted to clarify for others.

One of them has ties to another student murder at Duke?!? That's awful. :(

NappyBison 03-13-2008 06:56 PM

I'm not sure, but I was also hearing rumors about Eve Carson's murder being part of a gang initiation. But don't quote me on that one....I still need to read up on that and what not.
