The term doesn't offend me. But I wouldn't use it to a sorority girl I didn't know well and that didn't know I was joking.

The conditions were made because what is okay between you and your friends is one thing. Those who were defending the use of the term are sincere, I believe, in thinking that because it's okay amongst their buddies it's always okay. The point I made in Fraternity Rush is that you can't assume others you don't know won't be offended. Since we were talking about recruitment, we were talking about groups that contain lots of people you don't yet know.

I have friends IRL who would be offended - but as far as having my finger to GC's pulse, naw. Just because I feel a certain way I know far too well I can't assume everyone here will agree with me. ALTHOUGH MAYBE THEY SHOULD! I think that many people would actually be more likely to post here with their true feelings, as there is a certain degree of anonymity.

It would be interesting to hear from more actives - perhaps there is an age gap in being offended. Actives, is it common and accepted to use the term on your campus?

I have... and it wasn't in the endearing, you know I'm just kidding kind of way. A FRATERNITY GUY said it to me in a fit of anger b/c he was just so appalled I was joining a sorority and I wanted to branch out and make new friends. He also said it was a bad idea to move into the "brothel" (sorority house.) Dumbass.

Alright, I'll bite with a different opinion. If you're talking about Greek women in general, I find the term offensive. If you're talking about a woman who does the walk of shame at least once a week in a different fraternity house, then, hey, the truth hurts.

I agree. I think it's like any other offensive word used against women...like slut, skank, ho, etc. If a guy is using these terms in talking about women in general, then I'm going to think it's offensive and that he's a misogynist asshole. If he's talking about some particular girl that's acting like a Paris Hilton wannabe, then I wouldn't think it's offensive. I'd probably think it's not a very nice thing he said, but I definitely wouldn't think he was a misogynist asshole.

On an individual basis, when deserved....funny. Sorry. I am ok with calling it as I see it. If she's acting like a ho...well then...

To describe a whole chapter or Greek women in general...not funny at all. Personally, I'm not a skank, and I don't appreciate people assuming I am because I'm greek. And because most of my friends are guys I take that kind of stuff with a grain of salt, always, but that particular one really makes me mad.

I'm probably stating the obvious, but these terms are often thrown around between female friends affectionately in many colleges nowadays. It surprised the hell out of me when I came to college, honestly.

Even with individual behavior, why drag the "soro" into it? Call a spade a spade, and a slutpuppy whoredog a slutpuppy whoredog. Unless that would be offensive to dogs. Hmmmmm . . .I'm going to have to think about this.

Yeah, and I'm even guilty of saying, completely in jest mind you, things about pimping for something or whoring myself out on behalf of ____________ when I'm speaking among people I know well.

ETA: although other than the recent threads, I don't think I've ever used the word sorostitute. I'm too old to ever need to make those references in jest or otherwise about materialistic, kind of dumb and promiscuous young women. And, I don't think anyone ever double checks the Greek affiliation of someone who they'd describe that way. It's a type, not a reality.

If you ever read overheardinathens.com, any dumb girl of a certain type is described as a sorostitute. Is it a shame that Greek life is sullied this way? Sure. I'm a outraged as a Greek woman, nope, because it doesn't really have anything to do with the person that I am or what Greek life is about really.

now let me explain: for the three of my four years on campus anybody who knew anything about knew a.) I was quiet around people I didn't know or b.) I was a virgin.... My reaction would be quite different though if I was there and they said it to one of my sisters.


I personally don't care what people think about my sexual behavior, but if your going to judge my sexual behavior by what I wear on my chest or my bag then your opinion doesn't matter in my point of view and I would worry about anyone who did put weight in your opinion.

that being said, i think it is more offensive that some college women like the word, and use it themselves. i am also amazed when young women call each other 'hoes' in jest. have some class, please.
