Ok, so roommate #1 I didn't like. It's kinda a sad story I guess, cause I liked her at the time. We met at freshman orientation and we decided to live together when school started. Well, everything was great for the first couple months, then it just went down hill. I was going so far away to school that NOBODY from my highschool was there, so I pretty much had to start over on the friends thing. I had gotten this great music scholarship and everyone in the music department knew about me before I got there, so they all hated me. WELL, my roommate and I hung out together all the time, and with some friends of hers she knew before college. I started noticing little things first. She'd get really mad when a friend would invite me somewhere and not her--get this--cause she was friends with them first. Then she totally stopped going to classes--she failed EVERY class, and she would try to get me to skip classes too, which sometimes I gave in too much. Because she never went to classes, she would clean and do laundry like--ALL THE TIME--which isn't bad, but finally she snapped one day. I was running late and had to play a concert. After the concert I went over to a friends room. She called me there and starts yelling at me on the phone about how I left my hairdryer on her bed (which was right under the only available plug and mirror in the room)and that I had spilt some water on the TV remote. She complained that the room was a disaster because of it (which it was spotless besides the hair dryer and water) I told her I was sorry and I would come right home and clean up, she actually told me NOT TO COME HOME cause she was just too mad at me. So I finally found out later that the reason she didn't want me to come home is because she had picked up the remote to the VCR (which was mine) and threw it across the room and it broke. She was trying to fix it before I got home. Well, needless to say, things just got worse. She tried to go behind my back and get the Residence Life Office to MAKE ME move. She finally told me she was moving out into another room--but that's not it--she told me this the DAY MY GRANDFATHER DIED! I had really liked her as a friend, so it just tore me apart. I later realized what a b*tch she was.
Roommate #2 was the biggest slob in the world. She was a art major so she had tons of stuff. One time I decided I wasn't going to clean up after her anymore, and she had made a miniture log cabin out of sticks--there were sticks all over our room for like 2 weeks. You couldn't walk around in the room without shoes on! I finally DID clean it up. I also had to contribute to the cleaning of the carpet because she had spilled paint on it. Roommate #3: Just a terrible disaster. She had all sorts of problems--serious problems--mental problems. I won't go into detail cause it is pretty personal. Roommates #4-6 They were cool! We lived in a Quad. Sorry about the lenghth. Guess I had tons of bad experiences. |
So, while we're talking about roomates, does anyone else have this problem? We seem to do dishes 3 or 4 times a day. Most of us have our own stuff that we use. There are 4 of us. 2 girls use the same set of dishes/glasses, one girl only is here every now and then (to hog the bathroom and freeze my bread) and I don't use that many dishes. But it seems that our sink is *always* full and we're always running the dishwasher. And we somehow fill up 2 trashbags a day as well. Its just amazing how much mess we can make...and the thing is, I know I'm not making it, but everyone else swears its not them either...

The only problem I ever had with a roomate was regarding computers....he was on it all the time, and, when doing work (this was before the internet), he'd completely zone out of the "real" world. Consequences? Let's see:
Boiled eggs until the water was all gone, then, BOOM....if you've never had to clean up this kind of mess, count yourselves and your noses lucky... Cooked a pizza until it was the size of a walnut, and burned beyond a crisp...it basically desintegrated when picked up off the oven rack... Otherwise, we got along real well, were and still are good friends, though I learned whenever the computer was on, my first trip was to the kitchen to make sure nothing would go up in flames again.... |
*bump*
OK, Ima gonna kill my roomate. Our lease is up in 3 weeks, so I know I can last till then. Shes a sweet girl, but I cant handle it anymore. Just the sight of her pisses me off. I know I aint a saint to live with either, but I gotta put my foot down. Heres the deal. Bit@h think she a brother. Shes done a lot for the undergrads, bake them things, get them deals with her moms shop at formal, yada, yada, but she taking it way too far. Shes 27, never even went to college, just vocational school. She dated a brother for about 9 months back in 1997. First, she bought a mini paddle for herself. Yesterday I see she put letters on her car. WHAT? Yep. She also has created a shrine in our apartment of all my pictures I had taken while an undergrad. 10 of those collage frames is a bit much. I totally appreciate her dedication to our org, but I want her to back off. I cant stand hearing of member business from her, "someone hooked up, or broke up." and I cant discuss chapter business in the apt on the phone, without worrying if she's listening. SHe has the kozie, keychain, and speaks in that self important tone, "Well, the guys respect me. They know I am not just some girl who hangs around all the time." Yah ya are. We had two brothers pass away while I was an undergrad. One was in 97. She didnt even meet him, yet she has his pict up in our apartment. (and a big one, 8 x 10 its the chapters pict for when we move back into a house, I am just holing on to it, so It doesnt get lost) Makes me kinda uncomfortable. I hace dealt with it since last august, and I know I shoulda said something before now, and its too late to say anything, but I dont like her having our letters on her car. She doesnt even know what they stand for. It would be somewhat different if she was engaged to a brother or something, but come on. I guess it just really annoys me 'cause I have to see it EVERYDAY. 'Cant wait till August 1. I'll have my own place then. Question: Do ya'll think I am outta line here? |

Freshman year, I didn't have any huge problems with my roommate until the end of the year when we were moving out. She IM'd me while I was at work to tell me that she and our suitemates had decided who was going to do what as far as cleaning the bathroom. Maybe I'm just extremely stubborn, but I cannot stand when other people make my decisions for me, so I was quite angry about that. She also moved out before I did, and I wasn't there when she left. I got back to the room to find all kinds of dirt swept onto my side of the room. So when I moved out, I cleaned it up, but the RA charged me for dust bunnies under my roommate's bed! I was getting charged for the mess SHE left! I'm convinced that the RA didn't like me... she never was very nice to me, and I have no idea why.
Next I had a really quiet roommate who I got along with pretty well on the surface. We never fought, but there were little things that grated on my nerves that I just kept quiet about. She would have her mom and her sister and her 6-year-old niece up in the room all the time without even telling me they were coming. And they were really loud too, so if I was studying when they showed up, I had to go down the hall to the study lounge. Her sister would also call her sometimes at 6 am, and instead of being polite and saying she'd call her back because her roommate was trying to sleep, she'd sit there and talk to her, and not in a whisper either! And then her boyfriend was in the room quite a lot, also with me having no prior knowledge that he would be there. I had no reason to dislike him, but for some reason he made me nervous. So last semester I lived with one of my sorority sisters. We got along for the most part (in fact we're living together this year too, and we may even get an apartment together after we've both graduated). But again there are little things that annoy me. For one thing, she stays up REALLY late every night, and I had 8 am classes every day so I liked to get to bed at a decent hour. That was okay because she would just go down the hall and hang out until she was ready to go to bed. But she wasn't very quiet when she came back into the room. She'd throw stuff around, and she'd get on the computer. She has a mouse with one of those scrolling things in the middle... fine except it was really loud! Also one night (a Thursday night, and let's not forget my 8 am classes) I was so sick but we had to take our littles out that night. My roommate is 21 so while we were at the restaurant, she of course got drunk. Then she told me that she was going to be really loud when she came back that night because she was so drunk. Here I am, so sick I don't even want to be there, and she's telling me that I'm not going to be able to sleep when we get back. She can be really selfish and insensitive sometimes! Wow, just writing this all out, I don't know how I'm going to get through another year with her! |
Ugh, I sympathize with all of you!!!! Thankfully, i now dwell solo (the joys of being in the "real world"...)
Worst roommate story: I invited my two roommates to the restaurant I worked at for a free champagne brunch; they came and ate. I come home early from work and find them both on the couch with my journals, one new one, one older one. They read my JOURNALS, sitting on the couch in the living room! What GALL!! AI couldn't BELIEVE that two women that had been my "friends" for two-three years would invade my privacy like that.. right after I gave them a free meal, even. What SAD, immature individuals. |
SSS, sometimes my cousin stays over and he's REALLY loud doing whatever he's doing (playing video games or whatever) even at 4AM sometimes (he hardly sleeps)...I'm also a very light sleeper...so what I do is wear earplugs and wear a sleep mask/eye mask and I'm fine http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif!
That should help out a bit.. |
Sorry, gang, but annoying people are not an endangered species!
When you're done school and out in the workforce, it's ANNOYING CO-WORKERS that you'll have the pleasure of seeing on a daily basis! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif |
Lifesaver, my lord......I feel so badly for you!! When I was reading your post, I was basically thinking, "what a wacko!!!" http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/eek.gif http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/eek.gif http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/eek.gif
I wish that I had a solution for you, but I don't http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/frown.gif. You are not out of line at all. I think I would have gotten out already if I were you, so you show good patience http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif. Ehh, I haven't even met her, and already I'm scared of her! Probably she does those things b/c she really wishes she had a college experience? Still that's pretty sketchy... http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/eek.gif [This message has been edited by newbie (edited July 16, 2001).] |
First off, lifesaver, you're not out of line. It's disrespectful to everyone who worked so hard to earn the right to wear/display your letters, that someone should just slap a sticker on her car etc. My sorority doesn't even let new members wear letters, because they don't know what they mean yet - you have to be a fully initiated sister.
Now I gotta share my roommate horror story... At my school, dorm space is at a premium but everyone is guaranteed 4 years of housing. So freshmen are usually put into crowded rooms (3 people in a double, 4 people in a triple etc.) I met 2 really nice girls during rush, and we decided to room together. We wound up crowded into a "cozy" double. Roommate #1 had the same first name as I do. If someone called for me and she answered the phone, the caller would have to ask for me by last name, or she would assume the call was for her. She once talked to one of my sorority sisters for 5 minutes before realizing this woman was my sister and not hers. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/mad.gif (We were all 3 in different sororities) RM #1 also came in as a freshman but with a lot of college credit. The school wouldn't give her credit for some of it. So she spent the entire semester whining about how she shouldn't have to take freshman classes with the rest of us. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/rolleyes.gif RM #1 also had to study to music, however the concept of headphones was totally beyond her. Roommate #2 was a total neat freak. Our desks were next to each other, and if I had a piece of paper on my desk where one corner overhung by 1/4 inch, she would scream at me. The trouble really began when RM #2 began dating a guy who lived down the hall. Not only would they be having sex in the bottom bunk with me trying to sleep on the top bunk... He was a total racist, and he turned her into a racist too. He, she, and RM #1 were all the same race; I'm a different race. So before long, RM #2 wouldn't give me the time of day, but would spend hours chatting with RM #1, usually while I was trying to sleep or study. I complained, and, long story short, got a single in the middle of my freshman year. Which did not endear me to the rest of my floor, since it was a big room that usually went to a junior. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif Anyway, eventually my ex-roommates moved off my floor. After that, the worst that happened was when my suitemates continually used my pots and pans without washing them afterwards. I eventually had to start keeping them locked in my room... ...and now I have the best roommate of all... my husband http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif |
All of these bad roomate stories make me laugh. I feel for a lot of ya. I guess I'm just too easy going a person. I've had a roomate who had a gun in my dorm room, I a roomate who was certifiable, I mean freaking nsane, but all the stories I can tell now! All the fun I had with my roomates because they were crazy, I wouldn't trade for the world... though some of those appartment security deposits would have been nice to get back in full, only once did We get $10 of $500 back because we were only there a semester....
Off the top of my head I can remember while we were moving out putting our un-wanted couches in the other various appartment complex's pool (3 couches, 3 pools), My roomate writing his name with a permanent marker on our giant goldfish in the aquarium because "it was his..." or the time we ended up chasing around a bull near a friends appartment one wayward night and getting him evicted the same night.... these are the only stories I can tell on the board cause the other ones are a little bit too crazy, and the statue of limitations hasn't expired... They all had traits that would drive me nuts and I'm sure I did a lot of stuff to drive them crazy too, but whenever we get together we love to relive all our old times. I lived alone last year and was so bored I spent all my time at the fraternity house because I was bouncing off the walls. I guess I always felt a bad roomate was better than none. |
