FPD is short for First Presbyterian Day School, a private high school in Macon, Georgia. Stratford Academy is one of its biggest rivals and is just down the road.

Pike4Life,

Mrs. Butler's name is very familiar, but it's been such a long time. I haven't been back to the school in forever. Is Coach Turner still there? He taught Bible classes for us. Also, Mrs. Gunn. She was my favorite of all the teachers and taught me Latin for 2 years. I think someone told me that she left or retired though.

As for the Pikes, do you know Jon Filson? He pledged around 95 and was president before he graduated a couple of years ago. All of those guys were such fun to party with! I still go with them to Alumni Weekend every year.

I think Coach Turner is still there...is he the football coach? I spoke to the football coach this past fall, and I think that's who it was. I didn't or don't know Mrs. Gunn...sorry.

I don't think I know Filson...I pledged in Fall '92 & initiated in Winter '93 so he's a bit younger than me. Plus in '95 my chapter was suspended by the school and our charter revoked in early '96...so my mind wasn't really on other chapters at that time. But the good news is Pike recolonized here at W. Ga. in '99 and rechartered this past Feb.!!

Ooops...I think we changed this thread from "Baseball Players" into a two sided discussion about FPD and GCSU Greeks!!!

The last time I was in Milledgeville (this past fall) I looked for the Pike House but couldn't find it...it's harder to find places in Milledgeville in the broad daylight!!

dzrose93 07-07-2001 12:26 AM

Coach Turner helped out with football, but he also coached me in b-team softball. I really liked him. Nice, down to earth guy.

You're right, it is harder to find things in M'ville in the daytime!! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif The PIKE house is just two doors down from the DZ house in Milledgeville. It's on the corner of West Montgomery Street and (I think) North Clarke Street. It's directly across from campus - a big, two story wooden house. It used to be white with red shutters. I think they painted the shutters green in the past few years, though.

OK, so to get back to the original subject of this thread - Tommy Lasorda (did I spell that right?) is a Pi Kappa Phi.

As for the John Rocker thing - what an idiot! If he feels that way, fine. But he should've known better than to say it to an interviewer from Sports Illustrated. That's just plain stupidity. He should've known that he was in a situation where certain opinions didn't need to be shared. Whether you think he's racist or not, he certainly doesn't think before he opens his mouth!

Dianne, yes you did spell his name right!!!! I don't know if you saw/heard about it, but Tommy Lasorda was in the All-Star Game as an Honorary Coach or something. Anyways, Vladmir Guerrerro's bat flew out of his hands and knocked Tommy down! Tommy fell and tumbled (he didn't even see the bat flying towards him)! It was such a hilarious sight, one which will be played in the baseball bloopers for a long, long time! Luckily he is OK though http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif (even though I hate the Dodgers http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif)!!!

OK - Some of the wonderful MLB Kappa Sigs . . .

-Ted Turner - OK, he owns the Braves - close enough dude

-Stump Merrill - now a Yankees coach; I hate the freakin' Yanks, but he's a brother so he's chill.

-Steve Rogers - Pitcher, Montreal Expos (retired)

-Carl Lundgren - Pitcher, Chicago Cubs (retired)

-Cecil Upshaw, Jr. - Pitcher, Atlanta Braves (retired)

-Chuck Dobson - Pitcher, California Angels (retired)

There's a couple more, but no time to search - as for the Rocker thing . . . well, yeah, the comments were ridiculous and obscene in many ways, but seriously, there's no reason for this guy to be a pariah or whatever. He's not the brightest man, and he f-ed up, but Goran Ivanesivich did worse less than 2 weeks ago (anybody read about that?), but no publicity . . . why's that? . . . sure the guy's a freakin' idiot, and it's tough to swallow that these sort of views can be held in today's "enlightened" US society, but he got run just the same.

Speaking of Delts (but off the subject of baseball -- although, come to think of it, he was drafted by the Yankees) how about one of the newest members of the NFL Hall of Fame, Brother John Elway (also of Stanford, BTW)
