At my school, all org's have houses, our house was built specifically for my organization and it is a big recruitment tool. I lived in the house for 2 years and loved ever second of it (even the bad stuff). I'm not sure what a campus would be like without a house (houses), but we used it as a meeting place mainly, and as long as you have that, I would imagine that it would work very well :)

Commonly, if all are on the same playing field it is a lot easier.
When one has the edge, a house maybe, it helps. But as another poster mentioned, it can be a lot of money to have to handle. Dorm floors are more usual as Astro said as I know where she went to school. Many of the Fraternities had the same thing and some are doing quite well. But, times may have changed since I was there. All GLOs at my Alma Mater PSU-Ks, have houses and have for years. The main thing is to have a place that you all can get together with each other. If a floor, you can open the doors for a good old gathering!:D If a few members have a rental house off campus it too can give a central place to hang! |
my chapter has a lodge.
no one lives in the lodge, and there are no bedrooms. I like it that way though. It feels more like everyone's house. And there is always someone hanging out in the lodge when you stop over. it's pretty cool. |
my school has 7 local & 3 national sororities and 6 local & 1 national fraternities, and all of the organizations have houses... it seems weird to me that it would be any different but I suppose it makes sense, I go to school in a rural area so housing isn't too bad.

EKU (Eastern Kentucky University) has no greek housing as far as houses go. All groups to my knowledge including the local sorority have designated dorm floors as "group housing." They are able to decorate the floors as they wish as long as they meet fire/safety codes. We used the student center to conduct pledge rituals, chapter meetings, some sisterhoods, and practices (for events like AOII Lip Sync for example). Our chapter's initiation was always held off campus in a reception hall usually at a church. Other sororities conducted all rituals at the student center. Fall Formal Recruitment and Spring open recruitment events were always held at the student center as well.
I dont feel my experience lacked anything because we didnt have a house. I've served/serve on two facility corp. boards now; one with a house and one without. Each has it's own set of headaches and in some cases the same! |
