My problem is taking off after I have made a complete stop. I have never asked to be taught again because my teacher (sister) was sreaming at me telling me that I was tearing up her car. LIKE SHE LEARNED THE FIRST TIME!!! Hopefully I will learn because I hate her driving me places when my mom's car is not home.

My sweetie bought a brand new car last year (a 2000 Toyota Celica GTS!!!! Love it!) and it's a standard. Since then he's tried teaching me how to drive it with not much success. I have a lead foot and can't start the car to 1st at all! Once I'm in first it's smooth sailing (on a highway!)
My second real lesson was on the highway from Dallas to Florida on a vacation! Then on my 4th lesson I was driving from Florida to New Orleans. I had to stop for gas so I got off on an exit....and stalled the car at the top of the exit...causing a backup! Oooops! I then proceeded to peal around the corner....I got all frustrated and stepped on the gas too much (I REALLY hate getting into 1st!) That was in February and I haven't driven his car since! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/rolleyes.gif http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif ------------------ Vera Sister Plum #13 Iota Beta Chi Sorority Webmaster http://welcome.to/iotabetachi |
yes, my father taught me when I was 7 years old.
For those of you who don't, ya need to learn! That way when you get married or whatever, and your spouse/s.o. "goes" out, he or she will leave you with the "stick", because they know that YOU don't know how to drive and leave YOU stranded, if you will. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif I've seen it happen B4. |
Driving stick rock!!! It save on fuel cost and if anything goes wrong, it's cheaper to fix. And that is from experience. Plus, it's funner to drive stick on the highway. Though it does get really annoying when you drive stick in New York City.

1. If you are in SERIOUS traffic with a standard, it EATS up the gas! 2. Having to replace the CLUTCH and fix the TIMING isn't a minor thing. I had 2 cars back to back that were standard, yeah, while you are young, it's fun to drive, but right now, I want to put that sucker in "D" and go on about my business. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif |
My current car is a standard... I actually prefer it over automatic.
One of my very first cars ('78 dodge ram) had a "Three on the Tree" shifter... THAT took a LONG time to get used to. In the beginning I would slam on the gas, wait until the engine got really loud, and then let go of the clutch - if you can picture the screech of burning rubber and black smoke at every light http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif. It was a disaster. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif ------------------ Faced with the Divine, I was asked; "What one gift do you seek?" I answered ever so meekly; "I seek Honor, Truth, Integrity, and Wisdom, yet those are four. How am I to choose?" The answer came as a pounding whisper; "The four you seek are but one. I grant thee Compassion; for without it the four make none." Author - me |
I also learned on a stick but have been driving an automatic for a few years. Lately I've had to drive my bf old style BMW every now and then. Those crazy Germans put reverse over to the left of first gear which really messes me up. Other than that it's not hard. Just trying to learn to not ride the clutch around corners!

Now that I'm getting better, I would like to trade my automatic in for a stick. The problem is, I live in a small town now and I'm going to be moving to a much larger area with LOTS of traffic next year and I've been told that driving a stick in rush-hour traffic is NOT fun! |

Yes, I learned on my dad's truck. Then I drove a standard truck for about 3 years, now I have a standard car.
I just like them so much better! It makes driving more interesting and fun! |
Last 5 cars have been sticks! only way to fly. Feel like I am driving a race car. I am so use to it that if I had a manual trannie do not know what I would do.
When drove a police car, after the first time I hit the brakes for the clutch, I had to remember as looked kind of dumb jerking off stops cause I forgot ther is no clutch in auto magic! |
I kinda feel lame... but I cannot drive a stick. I know. I know... I'm a guy, and I should, but my parents got me a automatic, and I never learned. My friend is determined to make me learn on their Jeep this summer, so hopefully I'll be able to do it soon!

I have had problems with automatics, especially because I keep looking for the clutch! |

Heaven Help Us All!
Yesterday my husband's buddy brought over his beautiful new Corvette convertible so he could show it off to us. I was looking around inside and noticed it was an automatic. "WTF???", I said. (Well, I didn't say that exactly but I was thinking it!) "You bought an automatic Corvette ?" He looked at me like I was crazy and said, "Yeah, I'm not going to pay 50K for a car and then have to shift the gears!"
I'm sorry, but I believe that automatic sports cars should be illegal. Just my two cents, though! |
