"Hey John - Will you be at the Campus Center Movie on Thursday at 7pm in the Auditorium? I will! Love, Jenny" you get the idea.. I thought these & the greek ads were great! They showed a lot of 'spirit'! |
The majority of sororities at WVU still do this.
|
some bgsu sororities used to run their lists right after pledging, submit little cryptic notes during big/lil week, and post a list again after initiation. for some groups it was simply a more general 'welcome to the sorority' or 'congrats' type little ad with their mascot.
on the extreme end their were a couple of group who posted their formal/informal events complete with a list of who everybody was taking as a date, congrats to their new exec board, and a congratulatory type ads listing things like pinnings/lavalierings and engagements. to each their own i guess... |
This was pretty cheesy, but back in the day, at least five of the people on the newspaper staff were greeks. They had a running "soap opera" in the Personals, starting with something like "If you're in Professor KnowItAll's 11am class, have blonde hair, and wore green yesterday, I'd like to talk to you." It went on for weeks prior to Recruitment. They'd make plans, then one of them couldn't make it, one of them transferred out of the class - all that nonsense. It was like those old Folger ads. The two finally met at a fraternity party, then went to a sorority formal, etc. It was truly one of the most read items in the paper, and there was a noticable growth in PNMs.
And yes, we always published the names of our New Member classes. Every sorority also had a name for their class, such as the QT Quota Class, or the Electric Eleven. We (as in ADPi) only published first names, though, as we considered more an invasion of privacy. |

But I digress ;) |

Oh, and t*p, we'd put a last initial, if there were a lot of women with the same names. I can remember one page of ads with literally every sorority having at least one Amanda! (Amanda A., Amanda B., Amanda C....) |
I think it's a cute idea. My sorority never announced its pledge class in the newspaper (nor did any group at my alma mater), but my small hometown newspaper sometimes prints individual announcements when girls join sororities. Small southern town, pledging sororities=big deal.
|
I remember looking through my chapter's archives and wishing we still announced our pledge classes like they used to--I saw articles from the 20s up until the 60s. I think it's a good idea and it makes the new members feel even more privileged. Plus, it's a lovely keepsake. I like traditions like this!!!
|
At my school the NPCs did not announce thier NMs in the school paper (I don't think the school would allow), but some (we only had 4) would make fliers with the NMs names on it and post them around campus.
|
I don't think I'd want my name on some flyer around campus, but an article welcoming the new member class would be nice :)
|
The sororities here at Idaho place ads in the Argonaut with the names of new members, but I don't ever recall seeing a fraternity ad. All of the papers statewide (and the Spokane paper since it has a North Idaho edition), will have an announcement of kids from their towns and where they pledged, including men and women. The University of Idaho is HUGE on press releases, and things about students get sent to hometown papers all the time.

Sororities at UGA used to take out ads to welcome their new sisters after initiation. I don't know if they still do this.

your location is hilarious.
