For face care, expensive is worth it. I use kiehl's face lotion and sunblock and I love it. Shiseido sunblock is also really great. Body lotion I go either way. Jergens is fine for day to day use but I like scented lotions occasionally also, particularly to coordinate with my favorite fragrance.(Fresh's Sugar Lychee is my current favorite.)

I have a real problem with rough cracking heels in the summer (ewww I know..but I LOVE my birkenstocks). The foot cream completely reverses the problem OVERNIGHT...it is really amazing stuff. Bert's Bees is the only lotion I would allow the hospital to use on Mr Sageofages when he was there...at first they thought I was nuts (OK I was on the verge of nuts then..but I had a good reason). After a week or so, the nurses were all using it themselves at their work station. |
I use Kiehl's or Avenno. Kiehl's is more expensive, but I believe it actually does a better job of moisturizing. After showers I use Kiehl's Creme de Corps. At work I use Kiehl's Unusually Rich but not Greasy at all Hand Cream. I also use Kiehl's after swimming -- I do triathlons and the pool and salt water is really treacherous on my skin.
I think there are products that are just as good at the grocery store but I have really bad allergies and Kiehl's has the best unscented and noncomedigenic products on the market. I also use both company's sunscreens. I can use Avenno for a few hours but for prolonged sun exposure where I have to reapply I have to use Kiehl's cuz Avenno starts to burn my skin and I break out in a rash. |
Just scanning through, I haven't really seen any names of "expensive" lotions. I do love all L'Occitane products. The shea butter body lotion is about $30 a bottle and is wonderful.

I love Creme de La Mer. My stepmom uses it. I don't buy it for myself, but it is a great product if you need something highly emollient for your skin.
Also, Rudey, to answer your second question, I think it depends on the woman whether she sticks to the same products or buys tons of them. I am the type who sticks to one product because of my allergies. My stepmom and one of my sisters on the other hand are the types who will buy the newest most exciting creams all the time and then try the next newest thing when it comes out. |

I consider anything over $15/bottle to be fairly expensive. I usually stick to Aveeno or Burt's Bees for the summer, but I'll switch to Philosophy or something a little heavier for the winter when my skin gets all weird. I don't ALWAYS notice a difference in performance between the mid-priced and the drugstore products, but it's often worth it to upgrade to the middle price- it's easier to find products that contain a high enough SPF to actually be worth it (5? seriously?) and usually have a slightly better scent.

Chuckle...
My grandmother and my aunt were shopping in a posh department store that will remain Needless Mark-up  -- oh, I mean nameless. And at the testers area, my grandmother started "testing" all the lotions and their scents. Then some BEE-OTCH slithered by and snootily hissed "that is very expensive..." And being the southern lady my grandmother is, exclaimed, "Oh, let me try some more!!!" And the stupid woman happily obliged...

Hey I work at Bath and Body- so you know they're discontinuing cotton blossom, but they're bringing out a new cotton sent called sea island cotton (or something along those lines) it should be hitting the shelves soon, I personally like it better that cotton blossom! but they've really only made slight changes to the scent, nothing too noticeable. |
I like Burt's Bees as well (all except the lip balm which breaks me out and burns my lips). I like the cuticle cream-works very well.

I use J& J Baby Lotion all the time. The light care lotion is really nice for summer. I have some B&BW and a Benefit lotion but I use those sparingly. As far as the expensive stuf, like kheils or origins, I save that for bath/shower products not lotions.

I think the "new" Vaseline Cocoa Butter is the best thing on the market. It is perfect for dry skin and lasts all day.
The only time I will buy expensive lotion is with a prescription for eczema and in that case, it is definitely better. |
