I heard "beau" used often for boyfriend when I was growing up, mainly from people in my parents' or grandparents' generations. Despite what urbandictionary says, I have never heard "beau" used to refer to a girlfriend. One didn't hear "belle" used nearly as often for a girlfriend, although it was occasionally used.

Meanwhile, many thanks to mealPlanLover (seriously?) for the useful hyperlinking of "male." I would be at a loss otherwise. :rolleyes:

I agree, I've only seen it used for boyfriend, but I was just being conveniently vague. I've never actually heard it in person, but read it in the Little House on the Prairie books :D
