The Inter-Greek Council (IGC) on amanda6035's campus seems like an example of a campus umbrella group.

I am fully aware of that. My organization has been a full member of the Inter Fraternity Sorority Council at New Jersey Institute of Technology since November 1993.

My question was just out of curiosity. I had seen on www.localsororities.org something a couple years about a National Association of Local & Independent Sororities forming but haven't heard much about it.

That's pretty much why I threw the question out there. I was more interested in finding out about what National councils a Local or Independent organization can join up with that have been well established similar to NPC, NPHC, NIC or MCGC.

I know some of you probably wonder why a local would want to be part of a national council if they aren't national. Some locals have existed for decades and some for over a century as the only chapter and don't want to have other chapters or be part of the NPC. There are also some organizations that have a few chapters in their region but not enough membership or no desire to be part of any of the above councils.

But I think that a National council would benefit these types of organizations by bringing them all together and allowing for more unity. I would also assume that this type of council could set up basic policies to keep chapters accountable for hazing violations and serve as a resource. I just think that a council for independent organizations in theorey could help make a local more official and less as an organization that exists for the purpose of hazing and not following any rules.

Does anyone else agree? Disagree?

What SigmaPez talks about would be a huge step forward for many locals, but unfortunately I dont know that there would be enough active support for it (I'm not saying there wouldnt be any support.. just not enough people that could truly devote the time to it).
Not to mention, many of the locals I know use the fact that they have no national umbrella over them at all as some sort of benefit (although I have no idea how that would actually be one). Forming a council over them would be that national umbrella... Wouldn't it have to carry insurance as well if it's going to be in place to organize groups?

I don't think so. I can't find a FLA website either. Just references to the association.
