We had two sisters who were members of the Seventh-Day Adventist church. They also observe the Sabbath from sundown Friday to sundown Saturday.

They were excused from events that took place during the Sabbath and we changed Initiation day to Sunday to accomodate them. It was never a problem.

If you like the PRADA sisters and feel that they may be a good fit for you, then religion shouldn't be a problem.

Did you get your invites back yet?

Ocalagirl 01-12-2007 09:39 PM

listen i caught I lotta crap on here when I made the same decision. I definitely know how you feel. If the conservation would have been amazing and I really connected with the girls, I am not sure that it would have as big a deal as it was. I had nothing against them because they were jewish and thought they were a great group of girls who had accomplished a lot, but they weren't for me. Now who is to say that I might not join that same one at a different university? Go with your gut feeling and if you are willing to join them for the rest of your live, DON'T PUT THEM DOWN!

<disclamer> not an initiated member of a sorority, but I do know what they entail when you join.

Wait!

Hold up!

Please explain. How would you know what it's like when you join when you haven't even joined one?

what she means is that when she went through recruitment she had a similar situation and so as someone who's been in that same place she's trying to give advice on that aspect.

It really didn't sound like it.

i'm right about to fall asleep, but i'm hoping someone will read this by the time i wake up and have to go to skit round. I'll go in the details of the last 2 days tomorrow after I'm done with my rounds... but I just have a question.

tomorrow is the 3rd round/skit. sunday is preference. and i was just wondering from your experiences from both sides (rushee/member) if skit round was "okay" to tell a house that you absolutely want "their house."

and also, how to go about it. i don't want to be act all cliche and come off too strong and get cut. but after the first 2 rounds, i've just had the best conversations with these girls and i'm absolutely in love with the house.

from both sides, did you make a decision this early? and if you where one of the girls in the sorority, would you like having a rushee say this?

Just for clarification this is BURBERRY.

GeekyPenguin 01-13-2007 12:46 AM

I think it's okay to say something like "I really love this house, I'm so comfortable here!" or "Your sorority seems great, I really look forward to coming back here every day."

Don't say it point blank. It'll make the conversation awkward. A member can not promise you a bid because a) it's against the rules to do so and b) she won't have any way of knowing if you would get a bid or not anyway, which is part of the reason why it's against the rules.

You definitely want to show enthusiasm for Burberry, and you can tell them things that you like about the chapter. For example, "your sisterhood seems very strong" or "it seems like your chapter has a lot of fun but knows when to be serious too". Think about why you like Burberry and point out things that you like to members without coming off too strong.

Another good way to show enthusiasm is to ASK QUESTIONS! Ask about aspects of the chapter that interest you. Social? Ask how they plan their events, what kind of themes they've had, etc (but do not talk about alcohol!). Philanthropy? Ask how they raise money and/or contribute time. Sisterhood? Ask about sisterhood events, ask why a member chose Burberry. Another good thing to ask that should definitely interest you is the new member period. Ask about bid day, meetings, new member events, getting a big, etc. or ask the member what her fondest memory of her new member period was.

Where else are you going tomorrow? Have fun and good luck!

lol yeah. i'm checking it during breaks. i have a "bye round" right now.

WhiteDaisy128 01-13-2007 11:15 AM

Don't straight up say "I want this house and no others..." --- strange things happen at pref and someone else might pull ahead...but I would say, "I hope I see you tomorrow, I'm having such a great time with ABC."

Best of luck.

greekprincess10 01-13-2007 12:15 PM

I just saw this forum, has there been any news yet?

I agree with the other girls that you shouldn't be like, I WANT THIS ONE!
A helpful hint, be persistant.
Good Luck!!

I don't mean to say I know what its like to join a sorority because no I never have and thats not what I meant. But I do have countless friends who have joined sororities and fraternities for that matter. It takes a lot of time and commitment on the the new members part to learn everything they need to know before initiation. I respect everyone for their commitment to actually go through with it. All I was trying to say was that I don't think it is wise to join a chapter you don't feel comfortable in regardless of your reasons or if anybody else agrees with your reasons. It has to be your choice and your choice alone.
