Kids are already too fat and lazy as it is! Why ban the only physical activity they might get in the whole day?! Besides, the real world is competitive. Might as well get them used to it early.

Definition of freeze tag for the 3 voters in the poll :p
One person is it and chases everyone else who is playing. If "IT" tags you, you are frozen until another player unfreezes you. That's how we played it.:) I am sure there are variations though. |

That used to happen almost everyday when I was in middle and high school. |

LOL.
Freeze tag and "it" were 2 different games during our day. Exclusionary? During recess? If you can't play or you get upset b/c you cannot tag anyone move on over to the jungle gym, the tunnel, the monkey bars, jump rope, see saw, etc etc. :D |

I mostly played basketball, soccer, and dodgeball on the school yard. |

At recess, I was on the swings. :) I hated the teeter totter. I was always in the freaking air.:( |
That's too bad. Kids definitely need more exercise these days, and most school yard games will result in some basic cuts and bruises. I agree that there should be supervision to guarantee that games aren't getting out of hand, in addition to a waiver from parents stating that they acknowledge the basic risks. Beyond that, kids should be allowed to play freely within the bounds that normal supervision will allow.
Banning the sport because kids feel excluded is extreme. I don't think that its ok to let 1 kid get picked on or constantly remain 'un-chosen' when it comes to participating. However, competition is a part of life. How will kids develop the drive to improve or prepare themselves from the intense competition that occurs later in life if they are so shielded now? |

Freeze tag and recess is a way to get these kids up and moving to stay in shape or get in shape. I wish I had some recess right now.:o |

I wasn't terribly good at baseball or soccer, so I remember tag being a game that everyone could play. Seriously, if you get tagged it's fun! IMO It's a much friendlier activity than team sports. It's a great way to make friends if you're new. It's much easier and less exclusionary to play one big game, than to sit in groups and talk.
If they're trying to stop kids from being excluded, they're going at it the wrong way. Hell you can even be excluded from the swings- lets ban swings! |
Some schools don't allow free play during recess, anyway. The kids do structured exercises/games similar to a mini gym class. One day there can be jumping jacks and supervised dodgeball, for example.
I think if taking a break and getting exercise is the issue, structured exercises/games are the answer. If kids want a free-for-all where they can chase their friends around, they can wait until they get home. |
