I have the 1874 dangle. I wish they would have had the series of dangles when I was in college so I could "collect them all." I also have a pearl that I got for a 4.0 for my senior year. Whoot whoot! I always wear my dangles and chapter guard when I wear my pin. I worked hard for that pearl darn it!

At our last Founders Day, a very sweet collegiate offered to buy me the other 3 dangles you get from the 1874 society if you're a 4-year member. I declined because she was told that if she bought them for me, she would be ineligible to buy them again for herself. :( Still, I do love them and maybe one day I'll be able to get the other 3.

My chapter doesn't do dangles because we don't do guards because 99.9% have the standard gold gloss or sterling silver badge. The VPNME just asks the NMs if they want a silver or gold badge, I think so as not to overwhelm them with expenses. I am the only one in my chapter (at least since 2001) to have a jeweled badge (and I have a chapter guard too). Yep, I might sound really materialistic, but even before I was Greek, I was set on getting a pretty jeweled badge for whichever GLO I joined.

I saw one sister at convention 2 years ago who must have had like 10 dangles on her badge. IMO, too many dangles detract from the beauty of the badge and the guard. I don't have any, but I think I might get some just to collect. I could make a SK charm bracelet with them!

Edit:

Wow sorry I asked. Forget I bothered posting.

I think she means "just" the basic badge. They're not really encouraging members to spend extra on the guard and other "upgrades"

Of course, anyone can get a guard, but other than showing your chapter affiliation, its most important function is to prevent the loss of your badge. So, while no one wants to lose their badge, most would agree that a guard is more important for jeweled badges just because they are more expensive.

When you buy the basic badge for $30, some people might think it is silly to buy a guard for almost as much (Plain guards from Herff Jones are $18-31 depending on SS or GG and if your chapter has one or two letters).

I have an odd question.

I have a dangle with my initiation chapter's letters (Gamma Theta). However, I now advice a new chapter and am much more active with them. Can I get a dangle using the letters of the chapter I advice or should I stick to my chapter of initiation. I love both chapters equally for different reasons. I was just curious. Is this a personal preference thing? Can I wear both? LOL!

Do you mean a guard? I've never seen a dangle with chapter letters.

I'm fighting a losing battle with the flu right now so I screwed up. You're right. I meant a guard not a dangle. :o
