Our campus has the whole summer rule as well - last day of spring semester (first week of May), until bid day (end of August) is disaffiliation. Wether or not it's in writing, I'm not sure of, since this is the 2nd year panhellenic has been on my campus, and the first year we've done disaffiliation. The reason they decided to do it for the whole summer is because our campus holds 3 different freshman orientations throughout the summer - one each month, and it's stupid if the incoming freshman are going to meet you as an "ABC" or an "XYZ" but when school actually starts, that person is disaffiliated. The only people to disaffiliate are the panhellenic president and the panhellenic vice president. The other panhellenic delegates (2 from each chapter) are still affiliated.

Here's my general understanding about University policy vs NPC vs campus Panhellenic vs GLO specific. A University Admin can make whatever policy it wishes and the sororities must abide by it because we are on campus at their invitation. The national organizations and/or NPC can attempt to negotiate with Admin, but in the end we are obligated to abide by the Univ's rules. Campus Panhellenic is required to abide by the Univ's rules and NPC's. If any of those are different than our own GLO's, we are obligated to follow our GLO policies (which should already be in line with NPC) unless we receive permission to follow the campuses. Does that make sense? :)
So in this case if it's the University that is saying dissaffiliation must be for the whole summer and not just the 30 days as stated in the Green Book, then there is not much that can be done aside from contacting your national org and/or national NPC delegate and hoping they can change Admin's mind. If it's your campus Panhellenic making this policy, then your national NPC delegate needs to work with your NPC Area Advisor to bring them in line with NPC policy. |
That would be fine if it was WRITTEN in the campus Panhellenic's rules, but this "verbal agreement" stuff is BS. I fail to see how groups whose officers change every year can have any sort of verbal agreement, anyway.

Good for you for questioning it and doing your homework. Let us know how it works out.
I was a PX in the 90's. Disaffiliation began at the end of the spring semester and was held through Bid Day. We could hang out with our sisters until the week before recruitment. No letters on cars, apparel, book bags, etc. This was in the days before MySpace and Facebook, naturally, but it was still hard. We had lots of people on campus over the summer, ranging from first semester freshmen taking summer classes to the usual suspects-- our campus wasn't as dead as a lot of other schools in the summer b/c we aren't located in a traditional college town. |
Ditto on the summer disaffiliating. Our gamma chis have to be off facebook from the last day of classes to Bid Day. Panhellenic Exectutive officers must also leave facebook and disaffilate. Sorority members must their profiles private and are not allowed to add, message, or IM any members before Bid Day. I think it's sort of dumb to just make Gamma Chis & Panhellenic Exec officers make their profiles private. Anyone could just log on with a male friend's name and go through pictures..figure out who you are.
