YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am so excited!

FSUZeta 05-26-2006 12:33 PM

it's all good, drolefille!! we are joining some terrific groups!!

what is the average chapter size? are there houses, lodges or chapter suites?

would you tell us a little about the campus?

Drolefille 05-26-2006 02:35 PM

I'll give you what I can and perhaps melsigkap can update what has either changed this past semester or what I get wrong.;)

St. Louis University is a Jesuit school with about 4000 or so undergrads. Greek life isn't huge on campus, but those who are greek go pretty hard. Quotas have been 40-50 over the past few years and chapter sizes range from 100-160 but it depends on the chapter and the year.

There are 13 fraternities and 5 (now 6) sororities (no locals) The fraternities range from... um.. big to tiny. Some of the smaller ones have like 8 guys, the larger have 100 or so. (approximation)

The five sororities are ADPi, GPhiB, DG, KD, and SK
Delta Gamma is the current youngest chapter on campus with 5 full years under their belt.

There are no sorority houses (and only one fraternity house). There is a Greek dorm where each sorority and fraternity (not all of the guys participate) get a wing or some other arrangement of rooms. The RAs are all Greek as is the housing coordinator for the building. Most people live in the dorm for their sophomore year and perhaps junior year. (Freshmen have specific housing) After that they live in on or off campus apartments, often with their sisters. All chapters have been offered space in DeMattias for a chapter room (though I don't know where they'll add another one) however they're too small for actual chapter meetings. We've had chapter in the lecture halls and auditoriums as well as meeting rooms in the Student Center and Administrative buildings.

Major Greek Events on campus include:
Greek Week
SLUperbowl - powderpuff football run by SPhiE - we all play for keeps
Derby Days
Also each sorority has a philanthropy week of events that the fraternities get involved in (and depending on the events the others sororities too)

Phew... any other questions?

Uh....you have a much larger Greek system than you are giving the school credit for.

If you say each of the 5 sorority houses is at 100 (on the low side according to you) that's 500 for them and if you say there are the same number of men in fraternities (500 - which is an average of 38 per house) you get 25% of the campus that's greek and that's a huge %. And I'm probably low.........

Drolefille 05-26-2006 03:33 PM

This is probably true... I'm going to dig for the numbers if I can find them on SLU's webpage somewhere. It is bigger than I give it credit for, but you don't have to be Greek to be cool or party or whatever.

/I'm so unarticulate today

ETA: I'd forgotten how much SLU's website sucks. And frankly I'm not a fan of Panhel's either. So, no actual numbers available.

/mildly bitter former webmaster

SmartBlondeGPhB 05-26-2006 04:15 PM

I didn't say anything about being cool or partying, I simply pointed out that the greek system is quite large relative to a lot of other campuses.

Having 25% of the student body going greek makes is quite huge. Most campuses are happy to get into the double digits in terms of % of the student body.

FSUZeta 05-26-2006 04:58 PM

thank you drolefille!

I know, I was just stating the atmosphere on campus. But I can't confirm numbers which, you're right, sound really high.

Actually the percentages are just about the same as at my alma mater (also a small private school) and I believe our chapter at SLU is relatively large so the numbers seem reasonable.

melsigkap 06-05-2006 11:53 PM

I wish I could remember the percentage of greeks...I don't think it has hit 20% yet but it's near there.

Greek life is getting more and more popular at SLU, and I've heard numbers reflecting that but don't know exactly what they are, because web stuff never seems updated. Basically, we're expecting an insane recruitment this fall, which is pretty exciting.

And yup, GPhi is pretty big at SLU.

honeychile 06-06-2006 12:38 AM

Congratulations to ZTA!!

I only wish more campuses had at least a 25% greek population! Ours was tiny compared to that!!

Big recruitment= cool... although I'm hoping pledge class sizes actually go down (and they will for one year because ZTA gets a larger quota and the rest of us will get a smaller one for their first year)

I wouldn't trade a single one of my sisters, but from a practical point of view, smaller class sizes would be better!

Melsigkap: let me know if you can find anything on SLU or Panhel's website... panhel's particularly is in shambles

KDwxgrrl 06-15-2006 02:20 AM

I was :::thisclose::: to going to SLU instead of Valpo, and Valpo is about 4000 students and I know SLU is bigger. Website says 11,800, I don't know how much of that is undergrad vs grad students, but I'd guess they have about 7000 undergrads. My impression was the Greek Life wasn't huge, especially compared to other schools I looked at like Purdue, but the Greeks were definitely a presence and made themselves visible. I know that the Kappa Delta chapter there is considered one of our more outstanding chapters, they receive a lot of awards. Congrats to ZTA :)
