Isn't that what you are suppose to do--sirens go off, it is like a block party. I swear I see and speak to more neighbors when the weather is nasty. Everyone comes outside and watches (after you get the kids settled in the basement that is)

Tom, I hope you are OK. I have never been through a tornado (A LOT a hurricanes, as of right now still no earthquakes). A tornado would scare me to death. Why would people want to come outside and watch?

The sky is amazing-- the greenish yellow tint that is not seen unless there is a tornado. The smell is incredible (yes there is a smell), the wind whipping around and then the calmness of it all. And it really it is a great chance to talk to the neighbors you never see.

My parents used to do that when I was a kid and it terrified me to the point that I had recurring tornado dreams that one would kill my parents and take our house and I was all alone. So, I stay with my kids now. Just something to think about (tornados were my phobia as a kid though, so I was probably an extreme case).

But, there is a big difference between Tornados, Hurricans, and Earth Quakes.

Hey Tom, did you read in the paper about the guy in Fordland, Missouri? Apparently he has the new record of person carried farthest by a tornado (and living to tell about it, perhaps).

He said it was a hell of a ride!:D

And in my hometown, there hasn't been a tornado since statehood. Everytown all around us, yes, but not us. It's because of the bend in the river and the fact that we're in a valley, so the typical path of a tornado will cause it to leave the ground and not touch back down until out of town. If a tornado came from a different direction, we very well could have massive destruction. Though the urban legend as to why is because there is an indian burial ground.

I find that sooooo funny. People living in the midwest see hundreds of bad storms in their lifetime. So, why must people go out and stare at the storms as if they have never seen one before?!?

But, it's dangerous. :(

For the most part (except the few idiots) we know when to go inside.

Actually, unless you are in steel construction, it's not safer or more dangerous to be outside.

And if the house is a trailer home, you are actually statistically safer outside.
