I've been serving as an educator for some 5+ years, it is rewarding when Parents come to thank me -and even my teaching assistant acknowledges that I have helped some child to read. It is gratifying to see the work that my students have produced and their creativity: be it a poem, a play, or a song. It feels good to know that parents see me as a professional when I am willing to go the extra mile for that quote "problem child"and it is gratifying to see the smile on my students faces everyday when they learn something new! Never a dull moment! I have served Alpha Kappa Alpha too through various community service: voter registration, community outreach, and programs of service with High School students. My role model was a Soror from my former chapter who received many awards for her community service and I aspire to be like her one day. I still have a lot of work to do!:)

I work for a non for profit. I could use a little more money in the salary, but I love my job. I teach people with disabilities work skills so they can become employed and live full lives. I also advocate for their safety, health, over all quality of life. The majority of clients in my program are black and it gets on my nerve how some of my clients are treated not only by society but by their families.
I wish people would learn that just because a person cannot communicate their needs, does not mean you should just treat them any kind of way. We are all children of God and should be treated as such. I have some clients who would just sit home all day if they were not enrolled in our program because no one wants to take the time to take them anywhere (because some are slow) or they think it is safe to keep them at home I could go on because I am very passionate about what I do and the community I serve. What I would really like to do is start an organization that teaches families how to deal with a child who is mentally and physically disabled and how to make them into independent adults living within their communities as that person grows up. But this will happen in due time. |

I have been doing non-profit work for a few years now and still am, but the difference is that as a campaign consultant I actually get paid something approaching a decent wage (50% more than when I worked for the nonprofits themselves).
As I did it for longer I was having a real problem helping organizations raise millions of dollars while they consistently underpaid me. I took the work because I wanted to give back to the world, but I have to eat and pay my student loans too. It was making me kinda bitter. |
