I agree with that sentiment. Since businesses in the GNO area have come back, WE ALL realize how valuable those less fortunate (poor) Af Ams were to the city. They had jobs that kept the area going. Those jobs were hotel housekeepers, cooks, waiters, waitresses, etc. Most restaurants don't have the normal business hours they had Pre-Katrina. If a restaurant is open 8hrs a day....THAT'S DAYUM GOOD! Some of the "upscale" restaurants aren't even open during lunch.

Who would have thought that Burger King and McDonald's (just to name 2 businesses) would offer $6500 signing bonuses and paying at least $8/hour (for one year of service)? They are desperate for employees!!!!

I don't know what they are going to do for Mardi Gras. It's going to be madness....

I think Mayor Nagin was inexcusably rude with his remarks. The only possible explanation is that, deep down inside, he was thinking, "There is no possible way that I want to be Mayor of this city for another term!" and did his best to insure it.

Many AF Ams all over the country understand Chocolate City. There was a record label named Chocolate City. Many funkateers George Clinton, etc have used the term in their lyrics.

I'm white as can be and I've heard the term Chocolate City before. (and understood it) :)

Personally, I thought he just meant that he doesn't want the area to be so gentrified with rebuilding to the point that blacks cannot afford to live there. Then again, I may be extrapolating some of the things happening closer to home onto his comment.

Big Daddy Kane also made a song called Chocolate City, on 1993's Look's Like A Job For.

The study used maps from the Federal Emergency Management Agency that detailed flood and wind damage and compared them to data from the 2000 U.S. Census to determine who and what areas were affected.

It found the storm-damaged areas had been 75 percent black, compared to 46 percent black in undamaged areas of the city. It also found that 29 percent of the households in damaged areas lived below the poverty line, compared with 24 percent of households in undamaged areas.

More than half of those who lived in the city's damaged neighborhoods were renters, the analysis found.

"The odds of living in a damaged area were clearly much greater for blacks, renters and poor people," the study said. "In these respects the most vulnerable residents turned out also to be at greatest risk."

Elliott Stonecipher, a demographer and political analyst based in Shreveport, La., said the analysis gets to the heart of the debate over how to rebuild New Orleans. Racial tensions have been high with some worried that those in charge of the rebuilding will push black residents out of the city.

"For this storm to suddenly rip that away from them, that feeling is at the heart of this growing racial impasse," Stonecipher said.

I think he could have said it the way you just did if that was what he really meant. As a public figure and the mayor of a city that is represented by all types of people, despite the disproportionate numbers of black americans, he should never have said that. I would feel the same way if a white politician made comments like that. If you are the mayor, you MUST remain objective and make statements and actions that represent your entire city. I could see how other people would feel really isolated. Especially if the other people were supporters of Nagen. Its the way I feel about Bush too, to draw a comparison. He continuously speaks to audiences that have 1 or 2 black people in the audience; small towns all over the country or in places that only have a select type of people. That does not represent the country that he is supposed to be charged with leading and representing and that bothers me too. I don't like either scenario and as I said before he insulted a lot of people and he should not only apologize but do the responsible thing and not run again or even step down. Hell, its what a lot of black people would call for if the "colors" had been reversed.

When the Washington Post detailed Nagin's speech including the infamous Chocolate Ciy reference, the aricle went into detail regarding Washington DC. The District historically has also had a high AA population. The Post columnist wrote that the CC expression dates only back to the 1960s when the CR movement was heating up.
