You would be absolutley shocked at some of the things you see. Lots of strange, strange people, great music, drugs you want to be nowhere near, and strange strange strange people.

I do agree that sometimes GLOs seem to get singled out for more attention to their partying than do non-Greeks. For instance, the Sunday, January 8, 2006 Richmond (Virginia) Times Dispatch has an article ("Board member hosted formal") covering lawsuits, charges and countercharges, etc. resulting from a sorority party. It's woth noting that the story DOES mention that the sorority shut down the party early and sent people home (in busses, apparently). It also sounds like steps were taken to make sure that alcohol was served in compliance with state law. Nevertheless, reportedly things "got out of hand because of alcohol consumption and sexual activity."

I'm not sure that the problem with this paricular party was that it was hosted by a sorority, or that it was held at one of the homes of a member of the Board of William and Mary. The underlying problem may be current drinking practices -- "pre-partying" in particular -- that certainly aren't exclusive to Greek life.

I have to second the proposal that parents need to do their best to give their children (Greek or not) good values and positive advice on how to handle or get out of bad situations.

That's a big leap to take there.

So she doesn't want her kids partying. She's honest. Most parents aren't smart enough to realize that a good upbringing can go out the door when a child gets on his/her own. You can teach a man to fish, but that doesn't mean he won't ever go hungry. She never says she didn't teach her children well. She just says that she doesn't want them getting into trouble.

I dare say everyone would not be jumping down her throat had she not mentioned that she doesn't want them being greek. I'll be honest, when I think of the stuff I've seen go on at greek parties I am a bit hesitant for my son to join a fraternity. Do I REALLY want to think about him being used as a game piece for actives to throw moldy fruit at in a game of pong during hell week? Not really. (I have seen this happen.) There are a million other things that I could say I am hesitant about him going through.

Am I going to stop him if he goes greek? No. And, this woman doesn't say she wants to stop them. She just hopes they won't go greek. So what?

I say this woman is concerned about her kids. Let's be honest here. She probably has reason to be hesitant. Anyone who says that they haven't done some really stupid/dangerous things is lying. She even said she hoped they'd learn from them.

But, everyone is so eager to burn her at the damn stake because she said one thing negative about the greek system. That's stupid.

It's just that her statement is so ridiculous and contains so many ridiculous assumptions.

1) She assumes her kids will want to go Greek.
2) She assumes they will get in.
3) She assumes if they do, they will do nothing but party.
4) She assumes that all colleges have a Greek system.
5) She assumes Greek life is the only place where debauching takes place, which is completely untrue.

It sounds like this woman got her knowledge of college life and how one becomes Greek from Family Ties, or something of the like. I'd have less of a problem with her saying she was concerned if she wasn't so egregiously stupid.

I agree... I didn't even get the impression that she was MOST concerned about greek life, she KNOWS just COLLEGE can be a crazy time, and let's be honest I think she DOES have a right to be concerned. Even those with the best upbringings do stupid stuff in college.

People remember Tracy Byrnes is jaded. She is divorced with 3 kids. Probably married her man she met in college and he ran around on her and screwed other college sluts, (we know there are many) why I do not know, she is HOT!! But it's enough to make her see things, at her age, differently than those of us who had a great college experience. I feel sorry for her.

My daughter goes to a college with no Greeks. Seems like there's an awful lot of partying/drinking/don't ask don't tell-ing going on at her non-Greek college.

I agree with dvs-dz. I've taught at 2 non-Greek colleges and I truly think they were wilder than the ones with Greeks. And let me add that I've seen plenty of things on both kinds of campuses.

Kids can go wild at any campus, be they Greek or not, and it's naive to blame it all on Greek life.
