As far as getting rid of him as a mod, it's been discussed more on the public boards, so any kind of talk about that is fair game. As far as putting moderators on ignore, I too wish that we had that function. I know that it was suggested to John for future versions of GC software -- something along the lines of letting us ignore mods in all the forums except for the ones they moderate -- or something like that. I enjoyed many of Tom's posts from the early years. Hell, I even jumped on the "EARP FOR PRESIDENT!" bandwagon. No one could understand what the hell he was saying, but many of his early posts were witty and made people laugh. I don't know what happened, but he turned an ugly monster, often throwing out anti-Semitic remarks and statements belittling women. These instances often went unprovoked, and many an innocent GC thread turned into trainwrecks because of good 'ol Tom. And when lifesaver (who normally does get 'into' things unless you're BarbV) has to step in and tell him to shut it, you know it's bad. Many people feel the same way Dani, AXO Alum, and I do. But for some reason we get singled out, often being told by the old boys' network that WE'RE in the wrong for feeling the way we do...and that we should just leave Tom alone because he's OLD and that that kind of behavior is acceptable when you reach that point in life. Whatever. Anyway, if anyone has suggestions for moderators, please PM John as he has final say. Mods are allowed to give their input, but as always, John gets the final say. |
Is anyone on GC familiar with the way the moderation system on slashdot works? Individual posts can get "modded" up or down - they get positive points for being insightful, interesting, informative, or funny and negative points for being trolls, off-topic, or flamebait. Individual users build up "karma" based on their track record, and this affects the starting value of their posts. The posts' ratings affect how visible they are - the top ones are prominent, and the worst ones don't display at all unless you specifically set your browsing level to show them.
Slashdot also has a rotating moderation system, where randomly selected users with good "karma" are occasionally given mod points to give out as they see fit. There's even a meta-moderation system where established users rate moderators, and the bad ones aren't allowed to be selected anymore. So it's fairly complicated, but the good thing about it is that it keeps things impersonal. The "karma" system also rewards users who behave well and keep the same user IDs. |

I don't think it'll fly here on GC and I have a feeling John wouldn't be okay with that. I mean, come on..he doesn't even let us use avatars! |
OK, this is getting far afield, but is John really planning to write a new GC system from scratch? No offense to him, but I'd think it'd make a lot more sense to choose one of the existing products and then configure it for GC. Doing a roll-your-own one would take a lot of time and there'd be a high risk of bugs and security holes. (Spambots can be a much bigger problem than impolite human users.)

If you put me as a mod in any other forum it would be free game. I would only delete post if someone was talking shit on Pikes, Asians, Boston Terriers or my mom. Ok I'm kidding but I wuold let alot of shit fly. Besides I asked John to be a mod for the Pike forum. Months later he still hasn't gotten back to me. I guess my " Hey bitch make me a mod or I Keel you" request didn't help. Vote Bobby for Pike mod, Rudey for AEPi mod, RC for Kappa Sig mod and Jestor for Chi Omega Mod and the world would be ab etter place. |

I just woke up from a nap...I had this dream...you were all pleasuring each other in what would amount to a wonderful digital daisy chain...the dream was right.
