Got to love the headline:

Fallon native, 19, dies at UNLV sorority event

Sounds like she (or the sorority) was doing something wrong

And her poor family - losing both her & her sister in a matter of months? :( How very sad. Thoughts & prayers to all those who knew & loved this woman.

Just an update. Our recruitment will resume in two weeks, it will be absolutely no frills, with no chants, ceremonies or songs. Delta Zeta felt very strongly about continuing the process of recruitment. We are having a memorial service tonight.
I really feel for this young lady's sorority sisters and family. What a shock to try to deal with.

I can understand why loud, bouncy songs during the rescheduled recruitment would be a little wierd, but why no ceremonies or quiet songs? I'm definitely not trying to sound disrespectful, but I think I would like to have a recruitment that is somewhat closer to what is normally expected than this extremely no frills version. To me, it would be harder to do recruitment that way (I'm guessing that you're talking about no decorations, no slide shows, nothing but quiet conversation during the events. PLEASE correct me if I'm wrong about that).

I'm just curious as to what the discussion and reasoning was. And of course I'm thinking of this from the point of view of someone who wasn't in DZ's room experiencing all of this firsthand.

Because a lot of the time, pref ceremonies make people cry anyway. In this situation it might put a few people over the edge.

sueali, hugs to DZ especially and the rest of the Greek community - this is a terrible shock.

You are correct 33girl - DZ did not feel that they could make it through any type of ceremony, so we jut completely got rid of them. A california DZ chapter is coming down to help them recruit because they have some girls that don't even want to be in any type of recruitment room (both DZ and SK have been moved to a new rooms in a new building) We will never do recruitment in the same building again (we are getting a new student union so we will be moved in to there) The pnm's are concerned (I've heard from Rho Gamma's and people in general)about what their experience will be like if they join DZ, some feel they will have a black cloud over their head. I try to explain to people that although it is unfortunate when a life is lost, it is the time when a greek community and a chapter is closest.

Thanks to everyone for your words and prayers.

What a classy way of putting it! When one of our sisters passed away, we told everyone that it's times like that which make you treasure each sister even more.

unlv will be holding a candle light vigil in honor of delta zeta member Chassey Ako tonight at 7pm. it has been a year since she has passed and the members of the greek and unlv community has a chance to come together and remember a beautiful young lady.
