If you hate your job and your boss is a douche, then give the minimum notice. 2 weeks is standard unless you agreed otherwise when you accepted the employment. I very much agree not to give any more than necessary b/c it could potentially create a bad situation.

ZTAngel is right on with her explanation of the law. As long as it's true, you can't successfully be sued. People will try for anything, and that's why a lot of companies will only verify employment b/c they don't even want to lose a bit of money on attorneys to get the suit dismissed.

Hell, it's nearly impossible to get of HR people to verify someone's employment! I'm moving to another apartment in my complex, and my dad is cosigning because i'm not yet employed full time. They have to verify his employment (even though I offered them a copy of his most recent paystubs!) and have been having a hell of a time getting someone to return the call from HR.

Thanks everyone! I guess I should have specified, I work in a bio lab for one of the university's extension stations. I work 200 miles from the HR office, so I can't really talk to them, though I will email the program coordinator on the main campus, since she is really the one who runs the department. I'm sure she can give me some more job-specific help.

I am the only one at the place who does my job, and my boss really doesn't even have a clue what I am doing half the time. In that respect, I think my job is safe until I train the replacement. It would take him weeks to go through all my notes and figure out how to train the person, where it would probably take me about 2 days.

I think I will hold off on resigning though. The only prob is that my boss knows that Mr. CougADPi has been job hunting and asks me everyday if he has found anything. Do I lie and say no? Do I tell him yes and where it is and then just leave it at that? My boss really lives in this self-centered world where I will stick around just so that his research goes on unaffected. That is not the same world I live in, strangely enough! :)

When your boss asks about your husband's search politely say "Thanks for asking he is doing great." While its nice to be concerned about your employee's if he is hounding you its truely none of his business about your "family"

FOr example I was asked on an interview recently if I was married, had children, planned on having any, and if I was going to work afterwards... needless to say that it illegal to ask and I politely said my personal life will not affect my6 job performance. Some bosses kinda push the line

Sorry, I just got back from vacation and my brain isn't working yet I guess. I have talked with the HR people about other things before, but its difficult because no one knows which HR office is in charge of the station I am at. The main office tells me that the branch campus is in charge of my station, but the branch campus tells me its the main office. They do send someone to the station once a month, so I hope I will be able to meet up with them when they are around.

So I told my boss that my husband got a job, but just left it at that. Boss said when Mr. Coug was over looking for apartments he should look for jobs for me too (with a smile). I felt better. Well, found out today he asked HR if there was any legal way he could "force" me to stay. Thankfully they told him no, because I am planning on giving notice tomorrow, for the end of the month. Thats what the HR person recommended, and she told me not to worry about being asked to leave because Boss doesn't know where anything is, and its cheaper for him in the long run to keep me until the end to "train" him. :) So, wish me luck tomorrow, I think I may need it.
