be careful about driving in mexico. some strange things go on particularly along the border. also be very very sensitive about bringing any form of a weapon across the border, also lots of insurance because many in mexico have none.

We use rental companies a lot--like everytime we go on a driving trip. We probably rent about 6-8 times a year.
I have found that Hertz will let you use a debit card--have them run it as a credit. Remember, though, that most car companies will put a hold for the amount of the rental plus some "overage" just in case. Make certain that you are getting unlimited miles. Always. Some companies only allow you a certain # of miles per day. Ditto with the gas.. fill it up on your own before turning it in. Are you a member of AAA? If so, they have some excellent discounts--"double discounts" per se. Example---$25 off a weekly rental in addition to their standard 10%. Check your website. If you're not a member, consider joining because the $$ you save in the rental will more than pay itself back in your discount. I think single membership is usually around $30 bucks, plus you can get all the perks of trip maps, area guides, etc. Definitely carry your insurance card ( or a copy) while you are on vacation and using the rental. You can also pay for an extra driver, if say, hubby is going along. But that usually runs a good bit, like $8-10 a day. |
