I want to be President Of Chico!

Greeks would all be National, fly right and multiply!

OOps, sorry not meaning to step on Local Toes. But, there seems to what inlies the Problem.

Now, to hold DSPhi accountable for renting a House to some numb nuts is getting over the top!

Tom, if they're shutting down a national chapter, not a local sorority in this case, then what would it help if all Greeks were national?

Tom is referring to the other thread about the Chi Tau fraternity.

You don't know Earp Speak, DAH! :p

Thank You 33girl!:)

In reference to Nationals, it is because of Risk Management programs in place and R M Insurance. There is supposedly better control by Nationals on hazing over locals.

Dont take me wrong, when I started a local, hazing was a no no.

But, it seems I get emails daily about National Chapters who are being suspended for hazing, Both Fraternitys and Sororitys.:(

Cal Iota

Does anyone know the chapters side of the story? When I was on Exec and we got into some sticky situations, there was always two sides to the story. I wonder if there is another side to this story and not just the side that Nationals gave the alumni. This is very upsetting.

I have heard absolutley nothing of this and I am good friends with many presidents, panhellenic members...although I guess not with any Pi Phi's so that's probably why I haven't heard about this. I didn't even hear through the grapevine about any event, and let me tell you if it was any big deal most greeks in chico would know about it...so I hope everyone is ok.

This really sucks though because we lost ZTA last year and now Pi Phi? Hmm like greek life wasn't going to suck enough this upcoming year.

This chapter was not closed by the school. It was closed by Pi Phi National Office.

Every house is on campus is on probation. The National Office has been working with these girls to ensure they are complying with the spirit of the President's charge.

Unfortunately, an incident occured that caused the national office to question the chapter's maturity and dedication to the task at hand.

There will be a press release after all of the alums and actives have been contacted.

I know the story now but it is not my place to reveal it. It's just a sad reality of the consequences of one or two groups actions that forces everyone to suffer.

You said it here!

Update 8/24/05: Paper Reports on Reasons for Closing

CSU-Chico's student paper reports, in an overview of news from summer 2005:

“Pi Beta Phi's Grand Council voted to close its Chico chapter after an underage sorority member was arrested for being drunk in public after a formal sorority party May 7. Officials for the national sorority said the sorority suffered from financial, academic and recruitment problems before the party.”

Article:

EDITED TO ADD: Oddly enough, the Chico chapter (California Iota) is still listed on Pi Phi's national web site, in the "collegians" section under "roll call" (at least as of 1:20 pm Central Daylight Time 8/24/05) Probably just haven't got around to updating that yet?

Did they have proof that she was drinking at the event and/or given alcohol by members who are of age? What if she had used a fake i.d.?

I'm sure Pi Beta Phi nationals has investigated the situation thoroughly, but it seems a small reason to close an entire chapter. I'm assuming that there is alot to the situation that the rest of us are not aware of.

Feeling terribly sorry for the Pi Phis at Chico for losing their chapter..... :(

I see it as being the straw that broke the camel's back.

It may seem like a small reason, but according to that, they've had problems for quite some time. Of course, those who would know for sure would be members of that chapter as well as Pi Phi HQ.

When an HQ decides to close a chapter, it's never a sudden decision. Lengthy discussion and investigations take place because no one ever wants to see a chapter close. :(

Right. I would not be surprised if they were already on social probation for risk management issues, and if that was the case, ANY violation, no matter how small, could end up closing your chapter. It's rough, but it's not like that should be a surprise. And if they were having financial and academic problems in addition, I'm actually surprised that they were not closed earlier.
