Mostly because until recently, our senior classes have been pretty small -- 1 or 2 at a time graduating. We had a drop off in recruitment immediately following our chartering, and even then, we only had 31 members total.

It's tough to get those programs off the ground, because it's generally assumed that there will be alums that are say.. older than 25, and more further along in their careers.

I can think of maybe 1 or two of our chapter's alums in the area that could offer much in the way of career mentoring.

I guess we could make an effort to hook up with the 2000+ alums in our city so that we could make this work, but, unfortunately, our other chapters in the area haven't done much more with their alums than ask for money (one just completed a 2.5M rennovation of their house, the other is in the middle of a 1.5M rennovation).. I figure in 5-10 years, we'll have our own chapter alums out there, we'll have networking down better, and, hopefully, we'll get someone with the initiative to get it done.

It sounds like the biggest difference is that our programs are more community based as opposed to sorority based. They are given for other students and people in the community, as opposed to just for the members.

Ivy Reading Academy at a local elementary to teach reading to the kids

Cultured Pearls program where we take High School aged young ladies and expose them to:

-A day at Nordstrom's Corporate offices
-Financial Seminars on Credit
-Tour of local university campus including residence halls
-Dinner at a formal restuarant
-College application assistance

This program is free for any high school young lady in the metro area

Annual Library Tea--fundraiser for the purchase of new books and the maintenance of the African American book collection in a local library

Bi-Annual Health Seminars that focus on SIDS, HIV/AIDS, Diabetes, Cancer

Participation with the Points of Light Foundation's National Family Volunteer Day at a Senior Center

AKA Coat Drive in cooperation with a local radio station

Talented Tenth Luncheon highlights members of the community who have made a positive impact

That's often the case. There is an option to make our programs community based. But, as a former active, with Greek Week, philanthropies, and a full social calendar, we're lucky to get done what we can.

HWGLO's are not, in my opinion organizations created for the betterment of a community. They are for the betterment of the individuals. For example, we do philanthropies to help our members to understand the value of giving back to the community, not necessarily for the value of the act itself.
