I guess I didn't make myself clear enough, but this was the MOTHER yelling this at the other students in the dorm. In addition, she has sent emails to the student life staff (including Deanery!) complaining about students having friends of the opposite sex over. We don't get this from other parents, just this nutcase. She feels that she can clog my inbox, as well as my supervisors, about students not living up to her expectations because her daughter's under 18 (her words, not mine).

If the mother wanted the students who lived around her daughter to maintain her moral standards, she shouldn't have sent them to such a liberal school. Maybe she should have had her live at home for the first year.

I'm thinking that it doesn't matter as long as the child gets to A college. The girl will take it from there once she graduates.

Personally, I don't think you crossed the line--what you said wasn't that bad. It's obvious that you are concerned about what will be in this girl's best interest, and you simply expressed your opinion. More people should do the same; enough sugar-coating. Just my opinion! :p

Two words for mom: CHRISTIAN COLLEGE!! (And as someone who went to one my freshman year of college, that's STILL not a guarantee that those around her will be morally correct! In fact, there's more heathens at a CC than at a secular one!)

So the mother agreed to pay all this money to send her underaged child to a university, live in a residence hall with "adults" and EXPECTS these young people to behave?

Okey... That's a little too must EXPECTATION... I agree that you all have to protect this young lady because of her age, but then, you can implement expulsion because of her age, too... How did she get accepted? Because she must of have been extremely smart for college... But it is about emotional intelligence, not IQ that dictates how well adjusted one is--which means, homegirl is crying home to mommy when she can't have her way in the dorm...

And these young people, they thrive on torturing this poor kid because of it, too, if what you say is true about the emails to residents...

I don't think you were out of line giving advice, but I think the second part of the story (telling her you could not believe her limiting her daughter's future) was out of line. Chosing colleges can be a very personal (and stressful) decision, and a lot of parents tend to get defensive when you criticize or critique their view on the process. It's their kid, it's their time to decide.

I personally think there's a good side to leaving home for school, but again that's my personal decision. I wouldn't call someone out for not feeling the same way.
