I don't know what kind of jobs you are applying for.
However, if by catering, you mean waitstaff catering, I would apply. It is pretty rare to have an event (at least for my company) on sunday mornings. When our scheduler calls staff to come in, they can turn down the event if they cannot attend, we don't just tell them when they have to be here because they are not full time jobs. If you are ok being a little tired because you were up till 2am cleaning a party, I would just try to get a job and not worry too much about it. Hotel catering staff probably work differently, I would try unique venue caterers. Again, this is how my company works, I can't speak for them all. |
As a former hotel front desk manager, let me tell you: it all depends on how desperate they are for help. When I was an FOM, we were HURTING for help. So, I would have overlooked this...BUT, if you starting setting a precedent with "church this" and "church that" EVERY Sunday (particularly when I know you can go to church on Saturday evening AND I won't ever schedule you doing a back to back (off at 11pm, back at 7am) ) after I was kind enough to give you time off for this in the beginning, I would feel taken advantage of and you would be out of a job (most places can fire you w/in 90 days with no reason at all). Second, there is no way I'd put a new front desk clerk on the desk on a Sunday morning anyway. It's the busiest check-out time and you are no help to me if you don't know the system yet. I don't want you calling me at home on my day off, so I'd have you working on a slower shift with a more experienced clerk.
*sheesh* SO GLAD I DON'T WORK IN A HOTEL ANYMORE! |
I would tell them "I won't be available on Sundays until after March 26th, however after that I will be free of my prior commitment." Don't mention it's church or anything like that - just say you have a prior commitment that will be ending that day. If they still choose not to hire you, that's their prerogative - they may find someone who is available on Sundays right away.
Congratulations. :) |
Thanks for all the advice.
I'm hoping that there will be other places that will be more flexible. I live in a college town where half the population are students that go to school full time. Obviously students can't be available at all hours of every day, so I'm hoping that a 3 hour unavailability on a Sunday morning won't completely kill my chances. And as much as I would love to wait until after Easter to find another job, I don't think my expenses will hold out that long. My last day at my current job is Friday. |
