It always amazes me how non-greek groups use greek letters to define themselves...are there no other names left?!?!? At Jackson State, there is a gospel group called
G Phi G which stands for Glorify God
(ie, Glory-Phi-God). I mean if greeks are always getting pointed out for having bad images, why are groups so quick to jump on the "greek-name" bandwagon?

What is the big comotion over this group? Yes, I don't agree in idolizing a man but they aren't harming ANYONE. Are they stealing interestees from your organization ~ NO! Why do greeks and non-greeks make a big deal because a group (new or old, especially blacks) decides to incorporate a greek letter in their name or use greek letters in its entirety (sp). Why are well and established greek organizations constantly condemning new groups that are emerging whether it be black or a multi-cultural organization. Can't it just be that the current nine choices for lets say BLACKS aren't appealing anymore and its time for a NEW THING.

Maybe because I am NOT a member of Greek organization I do NOT understand! However, membership in the current nine orgs are continuously growing which shows people are still interested in those orgs...

How do you know these women AREN't MEMBERS of a greek organization! We don't know that. All we know is that they started an org interested in the recognition, blah, blah, of Gerald Levert!

I'm not trying to be disrespectful towards any current greek member...I just don't understand the hoopla over this!

I Would sure hope that these women are not members of any greek organization...because I would see it as blatant disrespect to their respective organization. All I see is a step above a groupie. A high-class fan club. Ladies get a GRIP!!

Well the opposite to that question can be asked, "WHY DO NON-GREEKS MAKE A BIG DEAL ABOUT BEING GREEK", "WHY DO THEY HAVE TO USE GREEK LETTERS TO IDENTIFY THEMSELVES?"

Fist of all, the current nine choices don't IDOLIZE anyone. So of course they aren't going to be appealing for people who want to obsess/worship/jock/sweat someone.

Second, there are PLENTY of other choices that people can choose, especially NON-GREEK choices where one can start a NEW THING.

They could have identified themselves as the National Association for the Betterment of Gerald Levert-NABGL. However, these women call themselves "Girl's Primary Honey Is Gerald". The proper acronym is G.P.H.I.G., not G PHI G if one wants to get technical.

These grown women should know better.

These women obviously has not did their research on Gerald. I use to be a fan back in the day, way back. Then I read an article in a magazine where he was quoted as saying he doesn't like "FAT", "BLACK" women, and that's all that seem to be jocking him.
I personally was offended, being a BIG BEAUTIFUL BLACK WOMAN myself. How dare he snub his nose up at a fan, no matter what the size.

With all due respect, you said it yourself. You are not Greek and you don't/wouldn't understand. However, you do seem a bit adament and agitated...THAT'S interesting.

For those out there who don't understand why we have a problem with those semi-Greek and Greek-like organizations out there....

The problem is confusion of identity in the public eye. We as Greeks must be cognizant of our public image due to the fact that while we serve the public in our programs, our membership and practices thereof are not open to the public. People fear that which they do not know. People tend to 'make up' explanations for things and rely on heresay. The public also can get groups who are similar confused in terms of who the members are and how they behave. We have enough problems trying to police our own members without having to defend our reputation because some other group is jocking our colors, letters, traditions and symbolisms.

Besides, isn't there already a G-Phi-G (Groove Phi Groove)?

Oh, man, I hate to seem rude, but when folks try to quote the Bible it strikes a cord in me. Were you aware that parts of the Bible were written in Greek??

Your comparision is so way off because you assume that the greek letters were thrown in. But they were not. Maybe you should re-read those parts to figure out why the greek letter are given and not the American English translation which also could have sufficed.

The entire NEW TESTAMENT was written in GREEK to be exact. The old testament was written in Hebrew....

However, Moderators ~ before this topic gets out of hand I think this thread should be closed.

Uh.... God didn't use the Greek letters in that statement...and, if he had...he's the one who initially created all being, so, that's a different discussion.
Back to reality http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif, Glory Phi God was at the Greek in Philly last year. They were a wonderful group and they bonded in prayer with as many members of the NPHC that would stop and talk/listen to them. I don't see their use of G Phi G to be slanderous to Greek letters. Let's not forget that Greek letters have been in existence long before there were sororities and fraternities. I'm sure Greeks (actual Greeks--from Greece) may feel as if they're letters are being misused by fraternities and sororities at times (I wonder if they were ever asked for permission http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif).
As long as groups like GPhiG do not attempt to misuse any of the names within the NPHC, I really don't care. There won't ever be another DST, like, Devoted Sisters for Tyrese. Anyway, my only issue was the use of "sorority." But, these girls are a type of sorority, I guess...as long as they do not attempt to replicate or compare themselves to HBGLOs any further, I am not too bothered.

Why should the topic be closed? Last time I checked it was a message board where people-just as you did plenty of times-can state their opinion on the topic at hand. Everyone will not agree or see eye to eye, that's life sometimes. But when you really think about it, it's not that serious and the hoopla you see is just that-what you see.

Thanks for those who think I am not familiar with the bible but if YOU read (Revelation 1:8) you will find that the phrase IS a quote from God. I will even be happy to quote it for you: "I am the Alpha and the Omega," says the Lord God, "who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty." Please don't assume something about someone you don't know.

I was trying to make a point but I guess I didn't do a good job (I'll take the blame and leave it at that). I wasn't talking about the use of the terms sorority/fraternity. I was simply talking about non-greeks using greek letters. There was a point I was trying to make, and this is a conversation that I have had before with others who I've been able to conversate with. But I won't go into anymore detail. It really isn't worth the energy from my fingers typing an explanation.

I think those women have too much time on their hands and they need to take some evening classes or something...none of this is that deep. I mean, come ON! Gerald Levert?! ROFLMBO

I think these sisters have taken their love for Gerald a tad too far. As much as I love Michael Jordan, I'm not starting a sorority to idiolize him!
