On some campuses, while any fraternity may colonize there, the colony or interest group may have to request or present (for lack of a better word) to the campus IFC to join. Basically, they must show that they have met the requirements to be a member of the campus IFC. Regardless if they meet their inter/national organization's objectives or requirements. Once they meet the campus requirements, they are full members of IFC. For example, a campus GPA may be greater than the GLO's GPA and for the colony to be recognized by the IFC, they have to meet the IFC's GPA requirements X number of semesters in a row. They may have to pledge and retain a certain number of members for X semester/years to be granted membership. And/or they may need to have some sort of notice or approved from their HQ they they are meeting the GLO's requirements. Again, this is campus specific and not an NIC thing. All the NIC says is that a campus should not refuse any NIC member from colonizing or being a member of IFC. (see above quote) However, a chapter does not have to be recognized by the campus just cause they do. |

Right You are. Many if not all NIC Groups will not go onto a Campus unless they are Welcome. I would beleive that the same goes for HPC and HNPC Greeks. But, if the School doesnt Recognize GLOs but will tolerate them then They Might! The IFC is a quasi group that trys to decide many decissions on things but actually have little or not any control other than saying Oh, Yes, You can be a Member if IFC! |
I'm not sure how much teeth the NIC's "Open Expansion" policy has with respect to private institutions. Perhaps the NIC has yet to test this standard.
And since Elon is a private college, the NIC Standards may not apply. In any case, congratulations to Sigma Phi Epsilon. I'm sure they will be an excellent addition. |
I'm gonna bump this thread to update everyone on Sigma Phi Epsilon's colonization at Elon University.
Representatives from SigEp Headquarters have been on campus for most of the school year and held two interest meetings at the end of september and beginning of October. As of October 5, they had given out approximately 40 bids and expected to be nearing 80 by the time they are done. Apparently there was an interest list of 415 unaffliated men. This new chapter has already made ripples in the Greek system and they are barely formed. It will be really interesting to see how the rest of the Elon fraternities adjust. When Pi Kappa Phi recolonized five years ago, it forced the others to step up. With the addition of SigEp, everyone will have to step it up again. Always interesting at Elon!!! |
Congrats to Sig Ep!
I was a student at Elon when their previous chapter closed in 1998. (Actually their house was next to the AZD house that year and it was very sad to watch the letters come off the house and their door being painted white insted of Red!) I know some of the men from the old chapter had went "underground" for awhile, but I don't know if they ever were phased out after awhile. I was also there when Pi Kappa Phi colonized and whoever said it before said it the best, when ever a IFC fraternity comes to campus, all the fraternity men get really competitive - I think its a territory thing! |
