gold99gyrl 05-10-2001 05:47 PM

That was a HOLY MESS!!! She should be ashamed to put those prices or that stuff.

The funniest was the purse. Who would carry that purse before she painted the greek letters on it.

A MESS!!!

Regarding Spirit Concepts:

As I am celebrating my 10th year as a greek, one of the first places I went to in Columbus was Spirit Concepts.

As much as you may despise Bob, I gotta hand it to him: he does know how to secure GOOD 'nalia for the BGLOs. I will say this tho', the BGLOs nalia wasn't always in the back of the store. I remember when it used to be in the middle of the store, near the POS counter (point of sale). Back then ('93, '94), they had the lacquered paddles and those PHAT 2 feet long founders paddles (they discontinued those because according to them, the distributors was constantly late on filling orders--well, I have some business cards from the original distributor if you are interested, and they should be at AAHF next weekend--they were there last year).

As far as NPHC orgs stuff being in the back of the store, that IMHO is a weak argument, given that the nalia takes up about 1/4 of the store's space, and it may be a good marketing move, seeing that the flair of the 'nalia will draw customers toward the back of the store and to look at other items.

I bought my fraternity badge at SC, it cost an arm and a leg too. At least they GOT stuff for your orgs, and Gamma Sig. NO gear for APO, except an APO watch they have been trying to sell since '94 and is still in stock to this day, but the watch stopped running.

BTW, there used to be another GLO store called Ozz n Endz, but they closed down in 1996?, possibly b/c they couldn't compete with Spirit Concepts. ALSO, there was a Black bookstore located in the Newport building that sold some Black Greek nalia, as with Just Sweats, but they closed down in 1994 or '95 because the owners were laundering drug money. But you are right. SC got the monopoly on Greek 'nalia.

There is a Black bookstore I frequent called Black Art Plus, that got some TIGHT BGLO artwork. They used to sell GLO jackets--matter of fact, when I saw the AKA and Delta jackets in the store window (November/December '91) was what drew me in as a browser, long time customer.

CT4, 411, if the KAP/DST cabaret is not a private party, please give me some info on it: I would love to attend. 411, I will be sending you an email regarding the cabaret. I "missed" the Kappa sip last weekend; I was entertaining company from out of town.

Well, theres my $25

Whoa! I'm not arguing anything! I'm simply coming from the angle of a person who ONLY goes there for the NPHC 'nalia. I, too, remember when everything was up front; I am simply ticked that I now have to walk to the back for what I want. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/frown.gif That's just my laziness talking.

Now, regarding your opinion about what he has in there for the NPHC orgs, he doesn't hold a match to any black greek 'nalia shop I've seen. Personally, I could careless about pencils or post-it notes with cartoon elephants drawn on them--I'm trying to get a UNIQUE crossing jacket made for my spec or something like that. He doesn't have much at all in terms of appliques, so everyone's stuff ends up looking alike. And, although he's already charging both arms and both legs for the li'l bit he does have, he has the nerve to charge you EVEN MORE when you bring in stuff for stitching (jackets, shirts, hats, etc.) that were not purchased in his store! AND, it takes him forever and a day to get it back to you, 'cause he sends it somewhere else to get sewn.

Bob is an adept business man, and he knows it. If someone were to compete with him, they'd have to offer more, with a faster turn-around, AND lower prices. The problem with Oddz n Endz (from what I understand) was that they sold the same things Spirit Concepts did, but at slightly higher prices. So, they went under.

Until the411 can compete with him, she will forever complain and try her damnest not to give him her money. "Belie' Dat!"

And I'm Out!

411, having read your post, I will respond by paragraph:

P1: I am inclined to agree with you now that I think about it; but then again, I have not seen a greek shop with GOOD BGLO 'nalia like SC, but then again, I don't do much roadtrippin. Now I have seen Black vendors at street fairs (Comin' Home, AAHF, the former Capital City Classic), that had slammin' 'nalia, but they are not "stores" per se.

P2: As far as Bob and his charges, I don't know of other places that would have charged cheaper for the uniqueness of a designed jacket, but then again, I paid $150 to spec two Gamma Sigs and a neo frat brother in t-shirts and paddles, and that was two years ago. PLUS the fact that Bob now has Greekdom 'nalia on lockdown at SC, hey, having been a former econ major, it's all about supply and demand, monopoly vs. competition. Personally, I don't get very elaborate designs on my 'nalia; it has all been neo-esque in nature, so my charges has been reasonable, as far as a monopolistic company goes.

P3: Belie' it or not, I feel 'ya on that. But keep in mind that you may have to wait until event like AAHF and football classics (Circle City, Riverfront, etc.) before you can secure good 'nalia, and even that you can't get customized, or ya may havta do some roadtrippin'. Don't let Bob get to 'ya, tho'.

Hey Sorors and Sisterfriends ( I found a way to check my e-mail),

I am rolling at that purse. Oh my goodness. And the prices!!!!!!!!!!!That purse is definitely a fashion no-no!! What kind of material is that? LMAO. But anyway, these nalia' shops are off the hinge w/ prices. The best I've seen is the one across from Alabama State. Does anyone know of any nalia shops in Cleveland? Are there any Sorors from Cleveland? I'm heading back home soon.

Hey noticed that a few Sorors and I think Rain Man are from the Columbus area. Would any one happen to know about OSU's Block Party? I am considering making my first trip when it takes place.

I have a question about inappropriate 'nalia. This greek store in town will put this stuff (it's hard to describe) at the bottom of capri pants representative of your organization. Is that appropriate or tacky?

c&c1913 05-10-2001 08:50 PM

Oh, y'all didn't like the Delta lamp?? I ordered one for each room. NOT!!! As for those church ladies and Kappa band playing piano, my mom has all of those figurines (unpainted of course). She bought them at Cato's and the dollar store.

What's up with that Kappa candy golf bag and the wine container? When I think of a Kappa drink, wine doesn't come to mind http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif. The Sigma dust pan was too much. Anything for a dollar, I guess http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/confused.gif .

ASUDiva2003, according to the web site, the purse is made out of " heavy textured cardboard" Like THAT is going to make you want to buy it!! That is toooo funny!!!

I think there are a lot of cute stuff that you can do with handpainted letters, but if you are going to do it at least make sure the letters are straight and centered! My goodness!!

I don't know if you are aware of this or not, but the placement of a Delta ribbon on a multicolored bear is no more of a protocol violation than placing that same ribbon - or specifically, Delta symbols - on an ELEPHANT....as a matter of fact, placing symbols on an elephant is SPECIFICALLY mentioned as a violation of protocol.

Yep, I am quite aware of that. The funny thing about Spirit Concepts is that they seem to know THAT (perhaps someone showed them in writing), but didn't want to bend on the Grateful Dead bears thing http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/confused.gif, even though I tried to make it clear that DST doesn't have a mascot! What are we-- a football team? The almighty dollar seems to speak louder than any of us these days.

that is so funny. i know exactly who you are talking about. i remember smelling the popcorn in the exhibit hall http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif the snacks are tight, but i didn't buy a shirt either!

about fortitude, isn't the sorority in litigation to gain the rights to use her? so, he is really suing people?

on the other, i had never seen one on a little boy. or a 'my dad is ...' on a little girl. it was just different. i don't have a problem with them. the funny ones are the not so close relations: 'my neighbor, friend, god mother, etc is a/an...' people should really let that go.
