I would not say it for the more "traditional" part of gymnastics -- pummel horse, parallel beams, rings, etc., but I would say it for the "floor presentation" (the correct name of which I can't remember) where artistic presentation figures into the score.

Yeah, Ms. MysticCat thinks I'm crazy on this one as well.

Floor Exercise. I don't know, those things look pretty brutal to me.

MysticCat 07-23-2004 03:28 PM

I can agree, but not that much more brutal than some ballet/modern dance I have seen. I guess that's the catch for me -- why is one considered sport but the other is considered art and would never be called sport, even though both involve similar kinds of athleticism?

I see your argument, and I can somewhat agree with you because while race car driving is considered a sport. I don't see it as one. To me a sport is one where it requires some athletic ability (i.e figure skating, sychro, gymnastics). I don't see any athletic ability in race car driving. Skill, for sure, athletic ability, no.

synchro is a judged competition. they are judged on many different points, resulting in a winner and loser. ballet is not. ballet is done as a performance art. ballerinas cannot receive perfect 10s for their performances.

synchro is no different than figure skating, wrestling, gymnastics, etc. just because there's not a ball involved doesn't mean it's not a sport.

Well they can do ballet and someone can give it a 1-10 score.
