Thank you all for the advice and opinions...there had been talk about what some of you had said, I had brought it up to some of the brothers about thinking of opening the fraternity to people other than jewish men, however, we had all agreed ....seeing how this college is in the "bible belt" there aren't many jewish men (or women) for that matter to come to The University of Tennessee. Alpha Epsilon Pi is a great place where jewish guys can go and be with others...we have had many guys that are jewish that aren't in the fraternity go with us to synagogue, etc. and still are friends with us. In terms of "feeling comfortable in the house, but having to leave because of their religion...While, there are few jewish prospectives rushing, thre are not THAT and thus the reasoning to keep the small chapter of AEPi to all jewish men, there are plenty of fraternities on campus for a prospective rushee to choose from...I know lots of jewish men in other great fraternities on campus...and there has been a point over the years that even if you don't end up pledging AEPi you are more then welcome to stop by the house and hang out. There are many people that are good friends of the fraternity that aren't jewish and are always welcomed with open arms to the house. But, nonetheless, thanks to all for the advice, the more advice, the better!

OK I see more now of what you are saying;) My ex was Jewish living in the Bible Belt and said he ran into the same things you mentioned. It was very hard for him. But I don't want this to take over the thread and what you are asking.

Sorry to have cluttered up your thread RedFox. My advice to you:
Have the men make sure that each of these Jewish men going through recruitment get a personal invitation to your first event. As college men aren't typically attracted to a formal sort of thing, you may want to do a casual barbecue type event, and have brothers address the PNMs about how AEPi is a good choice for men of Jewish faith. I'd also see if you have Hillel and get them to talk up AEPi as well... And always remember...most people join fraternities and sororities for the people, not the other bullshit :) Good luck dear! |
