Good question. It could turn out to be something like when Disney refused to release Michael Moore's documentary b/c it was so anti-Bush & Disney is good buddies with ABC & the Bush White House. Hmmm...

That's something to look into.

Perhaps Disney didn't want to release it because it is not a true documentary and falls under the category of sensationalsitic proaganda.

And the book isn't?????

I'd love it if the first lady and her daughter would send an email to the View telling about their wonderful sorority experiences!!!

Wow! I read the book and thought it was horribly written. Can't believe they are letting her do the screenwriting.

With all the crazy groups on here (Death Squad, Cougars, etc) I would think some of you would form the GC Mafia and take care of people like Robbins. :p

First rule of GC Mafia, we do not exist.

That's the worst synopsis I've ever read. It talks about having eating disorders like they would say the girls have blonde hair. It sounds pretty blah if you ask me.

And I bet all of the Lifetime sorority movies will still be one million times better than this one.

On a sidenote, I read Vendela Vida's book Girls on the Verge and it seemed like such better investigation and research, but do you ever hear anything about it?

greencat 07-15-2004 07:45 PM

Here's an idea.

Instead of getting all pissed off about a reporter going undercover and writing a book about things she witnessed, why not take a look at how the sororities at your schools work? Why not try to change what the world outside of Greek Life views as vile or wrong?

Alexandra Robbins didn't write a book to make sorority girls mad. She did it because writing is her job, and she decided to explore an idea she had. It doesn't matter if you don't agree with her methods, or if some of her information is in dispute. Let's face it, sorority girls face problems: bullying, poor decision making, drugs, alcohol, school, sex, etc. So do all college students, but you've chosen to be a member of an elite secret society. People are going to pay closer attention.

So why not take this book as a wake-up call that the system is imperfect, and Greeks should get together and make a positive change at the local level. That's the best kind of response to this book you can take. Otherwise, you're like an ostrich burying your head in the sand if you think this author wrote a book because her sole purpose in life is to bring down the Greek System. She brought up problems. SOLVE THEM. Then you'll get your positive PR.

Did you read the book?

She wrote the book to make money, all writers that write to publish do it to make money :)

Gee. A new concept! Doing community service projects & philanthropy to try & change our image! WOW! Why didn't we think of this? All this time, I have been wasting time coming up with fundraising ideas to try & raise money for Alzheimers Research. Apparently, the Memory Walks & Lollipop sales don't do anything to help our philanthropies. I'll just have to stop my useless efforts & try to change the way others look at sororities b/c apparently, we don't do crap for the community. I thank you for your enlightened opinion!

This was on Robbins website...

Sat. April 24, 3-4 p.m.: Creative Partners Gallery, 4600 East-West Highway, Bethesda, MD. Alexandra Robbins will read from, discuss, and sign PLEDGED: The Secret Life of Sororities, as well as take questions on her other books, SECRETS OF THE TOMB: Skull and Bones, the Ivy League, and the Hidden Paths of Power; and QUARTERLIFE CRISIS.

Anyone in the neighborhood?

_Q_ 07-15-2004 09:45 PM

I'm just curious ... has Robbins' incredibly detailed description of four sorority girls' lives remind anyone else of ... oh, I dunno... Jayson Blair?
