What is GMAIL?
|
www.gmail.com
A new e-mail service from google.com. Uses the Google search engine to search through messages for more powerful searching and provides 1GB or mailbox space free as standard. It also threads replies and so each message is grouped with all its replies and displayed as a conversation. It is presently in beta (aka pilot, test) stage and one cannot sign up for new accounts but must be invited by an existing user. |
I'll add that invites are getting increasingly easier to get. I signed up 3 days ago (thanks again) and was given 6 invites as of this morning.
There are rumors as to how invites are handed out. I've heard that it's based upon the use of your account. I've used the heck out of mine -- probably sent over 200 emails in the past few days. Another rumor is that if you start a blog site, you'll be rewarded with invites (I gues that only works if you list your gmail address as your email). The second one may have something. I started a blog page last night and within a few hours had 6 invites waiting to be given out. Also, after you've given out invites, I'm told you're soon rewarded with more. Google seems to have taken a 'viral' dissemination strategy. I think it's pretty cool actually. Will make it much less likely that spammers will be using gmail accounts as they are somewhat limited in availability. |
***edit***
Although Gmail is down my last invite has been spoken for! Sorry! ***edit*** |
I'm late on board
It seems that all are out of invites. If there is another available, I'd like to have one. Please PM me (or I can PM you if there is a new round of invites avail).
Thanks much, Shel Update & ETA: I have an invite from crzychx. Thanks all! |
Interesting... How's it working out for you so far???

I had someone complain to me that they wanted gmail to setup pop3 services so they could use outlook. I'd have to say that gmail does a hell of a better job at organizing things. Here's a faq on gmail: http://gmail.google.com/gmail/help/about.html |
anyone have any invites left?
