OK Thanks for clarifying :) That is annoying. The subway in general is annoying. Especially when people are really bitchy during rush hour, and get annoyed because the subway is crowded. My motto is if you can't deal with it, take a cab. And again, what annoys me most about the parking garage is how am I supposed to know there are no open spots? You know what I am saying? People who talk on their cell phones while driving are annoying too. You know how many times I almost have gotten hit driving by an idiot talking on their cell phone?

Yeah but from another perspective, since I have worked with homeless people, some of them are perfectly happy living like this. I've had several clients who had housing all ready and waiting and they sabotaged (spelling?) it because they couldn't deal with the "responsibilities" that come along with having an apt, paying bills, etc. There are a lot of other issues tied into this problem as well but there are support systems available. Overall I think the cost of living is way too expensive for most people living in NY but I don't think that is going to change any time soon.

I also think that people in other cities don't really notice the homelessness there, because they are always in their cars.

Also because NYC is such a concentrated area of poverty, it is going to be more noticeable. I have also been involved in social services in more rural upstate NY and due to LACK of services many people are living in poverty without access to basic needs. In the related "social problem" of mental illness, I've attended conferences with Social Workers who work in rural areas and some of them said that hospitals and clinics offering treatment were sometimes 1-2 hrs away from the person needing services. Now if you are on SSI (about $500 a month I believe) how can you afford rent AND a car to get to your doctor? This is a whole other issue that I am sure is not exclusive to NY though. I am beginning a position next week where I will be working with homeless clients so I will keep you all posted about this issue in NYC.

OH! another thing I absolutely hate about NYC is the HUMIDITY!!!!!! I have thick annoying hair anyways but this weather certainly doesn't help!

I used to think that NYC was humid. Then I lived in Tallahassee for 8 years. NYC is not that humid.

I don't think that's a NYC thing. I think that's a subway thing. It happens in Toronto all the time. People step into the car and look around for a seat all the while a hundred people are behind them waiting to get on. I think some people, as soon as they enter the station, their IQ drops about 50 points.

The thing about New York City is that there are far too many people in a very small place. I don't mean just Manhattan. Even Long Island is overcrowded. I think a little consideration goes a long way in this city. Please, thank you, and have a nice day are rarely said and heard, but always appreciated.

As far as public transportation goes, please have your Metrocard out and ready when you get to the turnstile. Don't make people wait for you to go into your bag or wallet. If you are not ready step aside. Also don't stop right in front of me or congregate in the crosswalks and street corners like Russ and Kathy said.

I have to add to this: WAIT UNTIL I AM OFF THE SUBWAY BEFORE YOU TRY TO GET ON!!!!!!!!!!! I swear, this is my biggest subway pet peeve. Nothing pisses me off more than to have someone practically knock me over while I'm trying to get off. I will literally push and shove just to prove a point. So if you live in NY and you're one of those people, STOP IT. :mad:

Right. Also, if you're on the subway platform as your train pulls in, stand to the side of the doors as the people get off.

So, just because I wasn't born and raised here, I can't complain about people gawking in front of the building where I work, preventing me from getting in? I can't complain about not being able to make a meeting on time because there's a gob of people trying to figure out exactly what a Metrocard is? I know what to do to be a courteous tourist--it's just that so many people don't.

I love Manhattan and if something happens that prevents me from living here (or in a select few outer borough neighborhoods), I'm leaving the city altogether. If that doesn't make me a New Yorker, fine. I'm legally a Floriduh resident anyway. :p

I call them New Yorkers with a vengeance. It's not that transplants to NY can't or shouldn't complain about tourists or inconsiderate people. Complaining is a hobby here, lol. It's that some of them go over the top trying to prove their credibility. It's kind of funny.


I also can't stand crazy people screaming at me. Someone screamed at me in the street near Macy's at Herald Square, "Get the F*CK out of my way!" I was about 10 feet away from her, and no one was closer than I. It made me want to block that b*tch! Oh yeah this was on my birthday, too. Only in New York.

Let me clarify more what I meant. Many people come to NY as a tourist and think "New Yorkers" are so rude, when for the most part their main impressions are of Manhattan and most people living in Manhattan are not from there anyways. Perhaps it could be other tourists that are rude but also Munchkin has a point about annoying touristy behavior.

I also totally agree about the earlier post about the people trying to get on the subway before you get off. I will purposely stand in the doorway and not move sometimes because of these annoying people. I've also been known to "accidentally" bump these people really hard with my bag (I used to love having my backpack filled with books for this purpose).

Some more annoying stuff-when you are about to walk through the turnstile getting off the subway and people push ahead of you. Has happened to me numerous times. Also when people are so up your ass when you are getting off the train/bus. Come on give me some space! Some chick last week was so close to me she stepped on the back of my flip flop and it came flying off. I was like "excuse me would have been nice". She just looked at me and "giggled" to her friend.
