Not to hate on my beloved sorority, but you all need to contact NHQ about this. If you all get on there without their permission NHQ could do somethings to your chapter. So please, please contact them.

Show up for the taping, but NOT in letters, and let MTV know that if they mention on-air that you are Sigma Kappa members you will walk out. See what happens with that.
There's nothing wrong IMO with being on TRL - it's not like it is promoting porn - but for MTV to specifically say that you should all wear t-shirts that say SK says that they're being a little shady and want you for the sorority girl thing. When Greeks were on Remote Control, they wore letters but AFAIK it wasn't because MTV told them to. |
Ditto Ditto Ditto. If your sisters go on air, HQ will find out and they will not be happy about it. The reason is MTV likes to use sororities for their sexy, flashy image and that is not the way the sororities want to or should be portrayed.

i must agree with what everyone has said. (and this is coming from someone who would love to see our letters loud and proud on tv).
the baseline is this, mtv is trying to get back into good graces with the greek system as a whole. there pitiful way of doing so is getting chapters to agree to wear letters while completely starry eyed at the idea of being on tv. nationals has made it a rule that permission MUST be obtained prior to any media exposure such as this. and usually nationals will step in by sending a rep. i agree that yall should show up without letters and see what they say. no harm no foul if you don't end up on tv, but trust me, you don't want to deal with the reprecussions of disobeying nationals. they have ways....... (j/k :D ) let us know how it turns out. shelley j sigma k |
We had the Today Show do a taping here at WSU for "Blue" the 50+ year old pledge. We were invited by the fraternity to a BBQ and were informed that the cameras would be there taping (They followed Blue around for a couple of days). We had to notify Advisory board, and NHQ ASAP. We were not allowed to wear letters, and were required to conduct ourselves in a manner that represented SK and oursleves well.
CALL NHQ, call your advisors, talk with your president. If you don't notify them, you are acting against SK bylaws. I don't say this to be scary, but to let you know that there are consequences when you don't notify the proper people in situations like this. I have been in a situation like yours, so I do know what is supposed to happen. Wearing letters on the Price is right or in the Live crowd for The Today show on locaiton is one thing, but being asked by MTV to represent your specific chapter, and you will be identified, is quite another. |
SK at LBSU?
Hey, you're a Sigma Kappa from Long Beach State?
Interesting... There are a few Tekes on this networK (myself included) from "the Beach" that post... Which one are you? It would be funny if I knew you... GO BEACH!!! |
I won't repeat what everyone else is saying...but i agree. I just had an opinion I wanted to share. Sometimes on TRL they will randomly happen to pick a sorority girl to talk during the videos you know? Well even though I am a sorority girl, I get rather nauseated when I hear "and I wanted to give a shout out to all my Alpha Beta sisters at State U! WoOOOO!!!!" and they throw up some hand sign. Just because I can imagine all the other people in the country who aren't greek looking at this girl and going "oh my lord another one of those dumb sorority bimbos getting all cheery"
Not to say that Sigma Kappa would do this, I just think GLO's need to stay off the entire MTV network and all it's sister stations. |
So what was the outcome? TRL is half over here in Ohio (5:35pm)...just wondering....and hoping all sisters decided against it!

Hopefully they realized that it wasn't their decision to make & won't have to deal w/ Nationals... |

I've been on TV wearing letters unauthorized and nooooobody had a problem. Granted that's because it was a WIAC track meet and nobody watches those except the people who were in them, but still. :p |

Nope, we wore them on our own because we were proud! Wearing letters wasn't mentioned at the auditions, nor was it even mentioned when we showed up at the studio. They just told us not to wear white. I never heard a peep from our HQ back then. My picture (and another KD contestant's) were printed in our national magazine, so it was not a problem. Of course, this was 1989...MTV wasn't as "revealing" as it is now 24/7. Back then, MTV was only risque during spring break. |
