Ditto. Someone said it best earlier. The kid was only 16. He couldn't have even gotten into the party if it were only 10 people there. I don't understand why Alpha was even mentioned. It should have been "Boy killed in parking lot" It seems as if the media is trying to give the appearance that A Phi A or Black Fraternity functions in general attract these types of activities. Also, if there is a curfew...that's a "whole 'nother story". Although Alpha is clearly not liable, the damage has already been done by mentioning "Alpha Phi Alpha" and "teen killed" in the same breath. |
and this all comes hot on the hills of the whole smu alpha ordeal up in dallas. THAT is why the fraternity was mentioned--you can bet on that.

positive. most of my sisters don't even know what i'm talking about when i mention them. never met any, and they're not involved with any greek events on campus, so i think its safe to say that they're gone. |

its kind of weird all around. |
hmmm I'm honestly not sure if they are still an active chapter or not... I'm on the same campus as lyrica9. I've heard of Alpha Phi Alpha before, and quite honestly I remember seeing a couple of Alphas wearing their Alpha Phi Alpha windbreakers back when the weather was cooler.
I am just not sure if they are still active because from what I've observed not many GLOs from NPHC or the MCGC participate in Greek events. Paging Txsurfinwaves!!! Maybe she will know! |

I have also seen people wearing alpha phi alpha letters(on hats, shirts, and windbreakers)...so there is a definite possibility that they are an active chapter. However, NT does not update their webpages on greeklife constantly- they still have rush registration info up for Fall 2003, and the reports for community service are a recent as 2001- and they do still have SAE listed. I'm really not sure- I know that they did have a chapter at one point, but whether or not they are still active, ill have to find out. |

ETA: Looking back at official university mail sent out to NT students, they did send an email in Jan. with the subject line of crime stats and hazing, and lists the following organizations being accused of hazing in the past 5 years: Taken from my unt.edu account: The law defines hazing as an intentional, knowing, or reckless act, occurring on or off the campus of an educational institution, by one person alone or acting with others, directed against a student, that endangers the mental or physical health or safety of a student for the purpose of pledging, being initiated into, affiliating with, holding office in, or maintaining membership in an organization whose members are or include students at an educational institution. Over the past five years, the following organizations have been found responsible for hazing: *Alpha Phi Alpha, Eta Epsilon Chapter - UNT *Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity, Iota Zeta Zeta Chapter - UNT *Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity - Texas Kappa Chapter - UNT *Sigma Lambda Beta Fraternity - Theta Beta Chapter - UNT *Wings - UNT However, this has been in the last few years- and two have already returned to campus- Sigma Lamda Beta and Lambda Chi Alpha. So, they were found responsible for hazing in the past 5 years- whether they were kicked off is still up in the air. |
