I just go the book at Walmart. I have to say it was funny. It is a little different than "our Kind of People". Because despite your background you can be a BAP, it is all attitude. So I guess I am a mix of Betty and Butterfly. Now I went to Clark, and boy oh boy did we have alot of Bogus running around that place.

I went to Boarders and bought the book the day it came out! I showed it to my line sister and she got it the next week. I am definitely a Butterfly. I don't understand how one can be both Betty & Butterfly- they are pretty much the same thing except raised differently. That would make me a Butterfly. If anything, I have a few traits of Boho (I act, hang out in the village because I think it's cool, I go to raves) but when people see me or meet me they think I'm a Betty. I'm not stuck up, I'm not rich I'm just drawn that way- In the words of Jessica Rabbit http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif Butterflies give off that Betty vibe but once you get to know them, you understand how real they are, that's what makes them a Butterfly.

I read the book a couple weeks ago. It was cute, I liked how it went from birth all the way to marriage. I am a butterfly/betty according to the book because my background is butterfly but my personality is betty. I don't consider myself a BAP, but I will admitt that I could relate to most of the things in the book. I couldn't call myself a BAP because I am not rich, yet http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif I agree with SunnySmile, there are a lot of bogus BAPS. I think a true BAP has the entire package- the attitude, look, ect.

Tonight's BET Tonight is about how to be a BAP. It's a woman on here (a psychologist) that is getting on my nerves. I'm sitting here trying to find out about BAPs, but she keeps butting in talking about how its setting Black women back and excluding some and setting unrealistic ideals. :rolling eyes: Please!!!! They have said God knows how many times that its not to be taken seriously!!! Anyways.....from what I have heard on the show from the author, I would be a "butterfly BAP". Watching this has finally made me actually want to go and get the book. I need something new to read anyway.

I recently recieved BAP handbook...as a matter of fact it is in front of me now. I took the test in the beginning, and I scored a 13. A BAP maybe, or darn close... I have been researching the Black Upper Class for the past year, and I must say that it is very interesting. I can hardly put the book down. I would say that I fit the profile of Butterfly. Just a simple person... I LOVE THIS BOOK!!!!!!!!!!!

Ladies, I picked up this book while in Barnes&Noble last week and
I enjoyed the book.

I have many aspects of Butterfly as far as background and attitudes but I DEFINITELY am not into the whole 'designer' thing. In fact, my wedding matched Butterfly on all except for the honeymoon destination. BUT I have no desire to be a BAP and I am not jealous of those who are.

While this book was supposed to be fun, it DID NOT belong in the 'Humorous' section of the bookstore; maybe 'AA Interest' or 'Women', though.

Dare we ask the Greek affiliation of all the authors?

I don't want to rain on anyone's parade but, I found the book to promote superficiality. I also saw one of the authors on BET. She was a fairly attractive cinnamon-skinned sister who, acted as if she didn't want to be cinnamon-skinned. Pathetic.
Yes---I know educated people are more articulate and well-spoken than common folk, but she was way too pretentious.
I don't know maybe it is because I am Ivy-League and don't mind "keepin' it real" with my people. Go figure!:confused:

Volume.com dogged the book out, they said how it just labled black people and had no purpose. I love the book, I think that it's cute and a fun book to read. The website even talked about Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and how it's the only "true" BAP sorority. In my opinion, they contradicted themselves because they talked bad about a book for stereotyping black people, then in the same article they stereotyped a sorority.

Really? Did they say those things about Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority? From what I understand, one of 'em is a member of another sorority! Go figure!:eek: ;)

I was not planning to revisit this topic, but the authors, in a SATIRICAL way, inferred that AKA or DST were the NPHC sororities of choice among the BAP set.

The authors' Internet site got some serious pounding from members of Zeta or SGRho. I met two of the authors about two months ago, got their autographs on my book, but did not discuss any Greek-related topics with them.

The BAP handbook is supposed to be humor but...

What the authors said is that the platinum BAP card is only good in AKA and DST sororities, and that members of SGRho and Zeta Phi Beta who were BAPs slipped through the cracks, and could be forgiven despite their choices in sororities.

I think they could have said AKA and Delta without SATIRICALLY bashing the other two organizations, but humor does that sometimes.

I thought it was cute and a satirical look at the "Our Kind of People" crowd, but I don't think they were truly kidding - about 70% of it is true with the other 30% being blown out of proportion for chuckles. And no, I don't think you can be a cross of any of the categories - you're either in one or out - I disagree with their assessment of a Butterfly - in particular the fact that she gets her status by being mentored by a Betty or a Boho - I think they are influenced by their parents who want their kids to have more than them and have strong values - not mentoring at college - but I guess you would have to buy into a concept of a BAP to even analyze it to that degree. Some folks who think they are Butterflies are really Bogus without the bling bling mentality!!
