No for real she didn't know who she was and I told my father and he was like "Naw!! stop playing!" How can you grow up black in America and not know who Coretta Scott King is. [This message has been edited by BlueReign (edited July 18, 2001).] |
Tiger Woods
Definitely Colin Powell |
I saw this movie back in the day and I agree w/ the concept. But towards the end, things just got out of hand and went too far.
But...If there was a Drop Squad who would determine the Drop List? Who would lead the Drop Squad? Who would set the methods of persuasion? What would be the method of operations? Who would execute the persuasions? What would happen to infiltrators? Just a reality check. ------------------ MCCOYRED Mu Psi '86 BaltCo Alumnae Dynamic...Salient...Temperate...Since 1913 |
In order for someone to be "dropped", they either have had to have forgotten their cultural heritage, deny their cultural heritage, dishonor their cultural heritage, deliberately harm their fellow culture group members, or adopt the majority's attitude or perception of your own culture group (there can be other gradations of drop-ability).
I don't think Colin Powell falls into any of these categories. He seems to be a proud, Black man who happens to be Republican. He is very pro-Black on certain issues, especially Affirmative Action and access to equal education and healthcare. Being a Republican is not always equal to sell out. Now J.C. Watts needs to be dropped with a quickness CITA needs to be dropped. BET's head of programming needs to be dropped Having said all that, the Drop Squad mentality is counter-productive. It says that there is a "way" to be Black and if you run afoul of that, you need to be punished. That is un-American and verges on thought-control and totalitarianism. Its fun to fantasize though, cuz I would put a serious whuppin' on O.J, Ward Connerly, and Mike Tyson. |
Tina Turner. She knows doggone well, she ain't from England.
Yo butt is from NUTBUSH, Tennessee. LOL Charles Barkley This person at my job. ugghhhhhhhh! Lionel Richie...brotha ain't had a HIT since...LOL Diana Ross |
I'm with Doggystyle--J.C. Watts, Cita, and the BET programming director have got to go!! And while I'm there, I think I'll add Armstrong Williams, Alan Keyes, Tiger (for being Cablinasian when he knows his a** is black), the so-called "Independent Women" as mentioned by OA, sisters who chase other persuasions for monetary gain, any rapper who uses the phrase "You know what I'm sayin?" more than 100x during an interview, and the entire state of Florida. More to come....

DoggyStyle82, I agree with you. Although the movie is a cute and entertaining concept, I also feel it is a dangerous one. I am curious as to how the Drop Squad would determine the African-American "ideal." And who has the right to impose his or her opinion of that "ideal" on anyone else? The definition of a sell-out is a very subjective thing. Not to mention, some people have such a warped sense of what it is to be African-American. These days "being down" and "keeping it real" has taken on such twisted definitions. Heck, many of us on this board may be considered sell-outs, in certain circles, for various reasons (like the way we speak, where we live, where we shop, where we work, our political affiliations, where we chose to go to school, or because we chose to go to school, etc.) Personally, the way my people have been screwing up lately, I wouldn't trust not a one with this job.
And let us not forget that back in the day a Drop Squad was formed, but THEY decided to call it the KKK. |

I can see the reason as to why you want to drop Florida - they had the deciding votes - and I would drop the people with two faces on their bodies - especially the ones who tell you they're your friends. ......I'm glad none of ya'll (with the southern drawl) are like that!! |
Ideal08 and Kimmie1913: Okay, I know the entire state is a little extreme, so we'll just remove the governor and state officials first, all the people and laws, and make the joint a large, Sandals/Montego Bay-like resort area. lol http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif

We are very adamant about white people labeling our race as a "Monolith" but on the other hand we also want all Blacks to subscribe to a common agenda. We can't have it both ways. There is room for many shades of Blackness and many variations of thought/action. Nobody has the right to define Blackness for an individual except that individual. And, oh by the way - folks need to really get up offa Bryant Gumbel. ------------------ IotaNet Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc. Ok, this is not about "defining Blackness," in my opinion, this is about working with individuals who are working AGAINST the struggle. You can be an "oreo," for lack of a better term, and not be a sell-out. The peeps I'm talking about are UNDOING everything that we (in our service as BGLO's) are DOING. That's what I'm talking about. If I'm trying to keep kids in the community off of drugs and in school, the drug dealers are working against me. If I'm trying to keep affirmative action and someone Black is trying to get rid of it, they are working AGIANST me. But I guess it's cool if we still have house negroes in 2001. I guess. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/rolleyes.gif
But beyond this, can we PRETEND, just for this thread, that we are not trying to define anyone's blackness or sellout or whatever, and just say who we would drop? We're not starting the Drop Squad, we're just talking about it, lol. Or fantasizing, as Doggystyle put it. |
