Congratulations!
Delta sorors and sisterfriends,
Congratulations to you on the extension of Delta Sigma Theta overseas. I have a particular interest in the extension of Greek Life beyond the United States and Canada; I find it heartening that Delta Sigma Theta has successfully managed to set up a new chapter abroad (or is in the process of). From the little I have learnt of the 'Divine Nine' service organizations, I have picked up that they through each of their chapters have decades upon decades of strong ties in their regional communities with key strengths being dedicated alumni in positions of authority within business, government and society; committed to the goal of servicing the community. Because of these strong ties to [geographic] communities, I had always thought that Divine Nine organizations particularly, would have a hard time expanding beyond the United States and that this might not be possible. It's nice to be proved wrong sometimes! :) Sincerely, - Richard. ETA: To further clarify my thoughts above, I did not wish to convey any suggestion or implication NPHC orgs do not work on a national basis, or fail to support national philanthropies or do not work improve the life of those people for whom they were founded on a broader national level. |
Delta Sigma Theta, along with the other NPHC orgs, pretty much have had chapters outside the United States for some time now. The chapter in Jamaica may be the first in it's general location, someone correct me if I'm wrong, but we have chapters in Asia, Europe, the Bahamas and now Jamaica. I understand your ETA but our local chapters are meant to implement national programs. We focus on the area around the chapter because that's where we (in my opinion) can be the most effective initially. And those local programs often have some component that benefit national philanthropies as well. My chapter has a scholarship banquet that raises money for the UNCF for example. The chapters abroad are keeping with mandated programs in a way that suits their local communities. Hope this made sense.

Wonder what Central Region will get... |
I wish you had been here too Lex, especially when we took some of the visiting sorors to the beach yesterday. There were a few who were not able to stay at the resort on the north coast where the better beaches are, so we took them to the "city" beach (LOL). We didn't go in the water, but we had a good time eating fish, festival and bammy (y'all will learn about this) and they bought some souvenirs from some of the vendors who were there. We had a wonderful time and took lots of pics...which are coming soon.:D

Hey Soror,
Does your chapter have a website? |
Didn't mean to take so long to respond to you Kim. Yes, we do have a website. It's not really ready yet, but, you can preview it at www.dstjac.com . As I said...it's not yet ready and a few of the links are inactive...but...we're working on it.
